Introduction
In a progressive step towards enhancing student welfare, Waseda University has taken a noteworthy initiative by introducing a new service called 'toreluna' on its Nishi Waseda Campus. This service, provided by Next Innovation Inc., allows students to access free sanitary napkins right within restroom stalls. This initiative reflects both the university's commitment to a supportive educational environment and Next Innovation's vision of making sanitary products readily available.
Background of the Initiative
Waseda University, known for its motto of fostering independent scholarly pursuits and molding exemplary citizens, aims to provide a conducive environment for learning and growth. Understanding that menstrual health can significantly impact students' educational experiences, the administration collaborated with Next Innovation to install toreluna dispensers. With this introduction, students can now focus on their studies without the anxiety often associated with menstrual hygiene management.
Details of the Service
The toreluna service features 28 dispensers strategically located within the campus restrooms, ensuring easy access for students. The service officially commenced on January 31, specifically for campus residents and is not accessible to the general public.
How to Use toreluna
1.
Download the App: Students are required to first download the dedicated 'toreluna' app available on smartphones.
2.
Scan the QR Code: Upon entering the restroom, users must scan the QR code displayed on the monitoring device through the app.
3.
Receive Napkins: After scanning, students can obtain a sanitary napkin. Note that after receiving a napkin, the app will restrict further access for two hours, with a limit of seven napkins available per month.
This seamless integration of technology into personal care through a user-friendly app and intelligent dispensers helps normalize access to menstrual products, making it a part of the natural restroom experience.
Future Vision
Next Innovation's mission is to create a society where accessing sanitary products is a norm rather than an exception—in other words, making menstrual care a societal standard. The toreluna initiative leverages the privacy of restroom stalls as a point of contact, empowering women to comfortably take care of their needs without shame or hesitation. Future plans involve expanding this service to shopping malls, offices, schools, and other public facilities across the nation, reinforcing the importance of menstrual health.
