REI Co-op’s Generous Contribution to National Trails

In a significant move to promote outdoor recreation, REI Co-op has pledged a generous donation of $1 million to support America’s National scenic and historic trails. This initiative coincides with National Public Lands Day, scheduled for September 26, 2026. The co-op aims to foster a deeper connection between communities and the great outdoors while encouraging their members, customers, and employees to actively participate in influencing the distribution of these funds.

From September 8 to October 2, the initiative will include a voting process, allowing the REI community to help direct support toward eligible nonprofit organizations dedicated to trail care and advocacy. Every organization involved in this cause will receive a portion of the funding, with guidance on allocation determined by the outcome of these community votes. The initiative underscores the importance of maintaining over 60,600 miles of trails which encompass famed routes such as the Pacific Crest Trail and the Appalachian Trail, as well as local trails that foster community connectivity.

Mary Beth Laughton, the president and CEO of REI Co-op, highlighted the significance of national trails in providing solace and a connection to nature. She stated, “Our national trails give us room to breathe and help us feel connected to nature, to one another and to ourselves, so on National Public Lands Day, we're giving back to them.” With this donation, the co-op turns appreciation into action, inviting everyone to partake in the responsibility of protecting and supporting these cherished outdoor spaces.

This funding initiative is a collaborative effort with the Partnership for the National Trails System (PNTS), an organization that plays a pivotal role in strengthening the network of partners invested in America's trails. The support from the REI Co-op will not only facilitate trail stewardship and volunteer engagement but will also contribute to youth leadership development and conservation advocacy. This holistic approach ensures that trails remain accessible and well-maintained for future generations of outdoor enthusiasts.

In addition to monetary support, REI is organizing events at over 130 of its stores throughout September. These events will host local trail organizations, offering community members an avenue to discover trails, connect with volunteer opportunities, and engage in supportive advocacy for public lands in their neighborhoods. Activities will include hikes, stewardship projects, and outdoor events, providing hands-on experiences that enhance an individual's connection to nature.

In a joint statement, Courtney Lyons-Garcia, executive director of the PNTS, expressed gratitude for REI's commitment, emphasizing the importance of the donation in fortifying the ongoing projects dedicated to preserving some of America’s most valued outdoor spaces. The collaborative efforts concern everything from trail maintenance to nurturing community stewardship and developing leadership skills among budding conservationists.
