Crowley and Naturgy Launch Historic First LNG Carrier for Puerto Rico Energy Needs

Crowley and Naturgy Roll Out First U.S. LNG Carrier to Puerto Rico

In a major advancement for energy reliability in Puerto Rico, Crowley has officially commenced operations of the American Energy, the first U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier dedicated to transporting domestically sourced natural gas to the island. This initiative, a collaborative effort with Naturgy, seeks to address Puerto Rico's long-standing energy challenges by significantly enhancing access to reliable U.S.-produced LNG.

As Puerto Rico continues to grapple with its energy demands, the partnership between Crowley and Naturgy comes at a pivotal moment. The American Energy, boasting a capacity of 130,400 cubic meters (equivalent to 34.4 million gallons per voyage), is set to ensure a steady supply of LNG, commencing its service with regular deliveries from the U.S. mainland directly to Naturgy's facility in Penuelas, Puerto Rico. This arrangement is designed to support the island's energy grid, which has often struggled with reliability issues.

Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González-Colón expressed her enthusiasm for this milestone, highlighting its significance in stabilizing the energy grid and enhancing power reliability for residents and businesses alike. This vessel not only promises an increased supply of LNG but also symbolizes an initiative aligned with current regulations to tap into a U.S.-based energy source.

The American Energy measures an impressive 900 feet in length (approximately 274 meters) and meets all safety and regulatory standards as per the U.S. Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1996. With its CAP 1 safety rating, it signifies Crowley's commitment to maintaining high standards in operational excellence and safety.

This strategic development reflects Crowley’s more than seven decades of dedication to Puerto Rico, further solidified by the operation of their Isla Grande cargo terminal in San Juan, which supports various logistics needs, including the delivery of LNG fuels. Annually, Crowley handles over 94 million gallons of LNG through its dedicated terminal, along with ocean and land transportation solutions using ISO tank containers.

To put the energy capacity into perspective, a single delivery of LNG aboard the American Energy is capable of powering 80,000 homes for an entire year. Unlike diesel and other traditional energy sources, LNG is recognized for its lower carbon footprint and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, making it a more environmentally responsible option.

Tom Crowley, Chairman and CEO of Crowley Corporation, expressed pride in expanding U.S. LNG availability in Puerto Rico through this partnership. He emphasized LNG's role as a reliable energy source that not only addresses the growing power needs of Puerto Rico but also contributes positively to American energy independence and job creation.

The contract further solidifies Naturgy's foothold in the global LNG market and provides a stable and competitive energy route for Puerto Rico. Jon Ganuza, General Manager of Supply and Wholesale Markets at Naturgy, noted the importance of this contract in ensuring reliable energy access for the island’s inhabitants.

American Energy will be manned by U.S. mariners, which aligns with the nation's maritime workforce interests. Notably, many mariners share roots with Puerto Rico, adding a layer of community connection to this project. Both the American Maritime Officers and the Seafarers International Union have expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to partake in this significant venture.

Crowley, a company with over 130 years of maritime excellence, has made substantial investments in transportation and logistics, emphasizing sustainability and innovation in its operations. For Naturgy, this marks a continued commitment to delivering quality energy solutions while promoting sustainable practices.

As the American Energy sets sail, it not only marks a historic moment for Puerto Rico's energy landscape but also underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing energy challenges and enhancing resilience in the face of growing demand.
