LifeStance Health Sees Significant Progress in Treatment-Resistant Depression with Esketamine and TMS
LifeStance Health Expands Access to Key Depression Treatments
In a groundbreaking development, LifeStance Health, a major provider of outpatient mental health care in the U.S., is significantly enhancing access to specialty treatments designed for patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression (TRD). The organization is now offering two innovative options: esketamine (known commercially as Spravato) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Recent analyses have demonstrated that both treatments yield clinically meaningful improvements in alleviating depressive symptoms and reducing suicidal thoughts among patients.
Patients grappling with treatment-resistant depression face persistent depressive symptoms that often do not respond to traditional antidepressant therapies or psychotherapies. According to LifeStance's findings, an average TRD patient can endure up to 571 days in a depressive episode, which significantly hampers daily functioning and overall quality of life. Recognizing this urgent need for effective interventions, LifeStance has closely analyzed patient outcomes associated with these two treatments.
Significant Improvements Observed
In the analysis focusing on esketamine, a remarkable 74% of patients reported a clinically meaningful reduction in depression severity after just 12 weeks of treatment. Moreover, the prevalence of suicidal ideation, which affected 13% of patients before treatment, plummeted to a mere 2% following administration of esketamine. This data was drawn from a comprehensive study involving 258 LifeStance patients. These results are a promising indication of how esketamine can transform the lives of those who have battled persistent depression.
On the other hand, patients undergoing TMS therapy also showcased positive outcomes. Approximately 61% of patients experienced a notable decrease in depression severity after completing at least 30 treatment sessions. Before treatment, 13% of participants reported suicidal thoughts nearly every day, a number which halved to 6% after TMS sessions. This analysis encompassed 355 LifeStance patients. Though these observational results do not guarantee individual outcomes, they support the effectiveness of such evidence-based treatment options for individuals who have not responded well to conventional approaches.
Addressing a Critical Need
The significance of treatments like esketamine and TMS cannot be overstated. Research indicates that up to 30% of individuals diagnosed with major depressive disorder in the U.S. – approximately 2.8 million people – are affected by treatment-resistant depression. LifeStance estimates that nearly 139,000 of its patients experienced TRD within the past year, marking a substantial portion of the 1 million individuals the organization serves annually. This correlates to about 28% of all LifeStance patients diagnosed with depression.
To meet the growing demand for such therapies, LifeStance has dramatically increased its reach. Over the past year, the facilities offering these specialty services have surged from 33 to 69, with esketamine now available in 18 states and TMS in 22 states. Plans for further expansion in 2027 are on the horizon, aiming to provide a broader network of access for patients in need.
Hope for the Future
Dr. Stephanie Eken, Chief Medical Officer at LifeStance Health, elaborated on the importance of these therapies: “For patients with treatment-resistant depression, not finding relief from previous treatments does not mean they are out of options. The improvements we're observing with esketamine and TMS provide new hope for those who have faced ongoing struggles, including severe symptoms and suicidal ideation. It’s vital that patients aware of such effective options avail themselves of these treatments.”
LifeStance is committed to transparency in its clinical practices, regularly publishing outcomes data and employing a measurement-based care approach to monitor patient progress throughout their treatment journeys. This commitment is reflective of the organization’s ongoing goal to improve access to personalized mental health care, addressing the diverse needs of their patients.
