The landscape of iron ore mining in the United States is undergoing a significant transformation. Mesabi Metallics Company LLC has announced a historic milestone with the successful completion of its first production blast, a crucial step towards reviving domestic mining since the establishment of the last new iron ore mine and pellet plant in Minnesota nearly fifty years ago.

On July 13, 2026, in Nashwauk, Minnesota, the industry witnessed a remarkable event. This initial blast utilized a 66-hole detonation pattern that successfully fragmented approximately 211,000 tons of ore, equivalent to nearly half of the total rock volume that was excavated to construct Mount Rushmore. This operation cleared the initial ramp to the pit, paving the way for 400-ton dump trucks to transport ore from the mine for the very first time.

Shane Holman, General Manager of the mine, stated, _"With this first blast, the project transitions from the preparatory phase into full-scale production."_ The ore extracted will be processed into Direct Reduction (DR) quality pellets, which are regarded as some of the highest quality in the world.
