Leidos to Revamp Kazakhstan's Air Traffic Control
Leidos, a leader in technology and industry solutions, is set to transform Kazakhstan's air traffic control system, following over 20 years of continuous support to the nation's aviation sector. Recently, the company entered into a contract with Kazaeronavigatsia (KAN), the official air navigation service provider of Kazakhstan. This significant upgrade is anticipated to accommodate the soaring growth projected for the country's aviation field.
With an emphasis on both hardware enhancements and advanced software solutions, Leidos will be installing its innovative SkyLine-X Air Traffic Management System. This sophisticated platform empowers air traffic controllers with comprehensive surveillance capabilities and improved safety features, delivering streamlined operational processes that are crucial for effective air traffic management.
As the Director General of Kazaeronavigatsia, Faat Bogdashkin, remarked, “Leidos has not merely been a supplier but has emerged as a strategic ally in our endeavors. Their proactive approach in addressing our requirements has positioned us well as we adapt to a shifting market landscape.” The modernization initiative utilizing SkyLine-X is vital to fulfill the mission of managing the increasing air traffic volume within Kazakhstan safely.
This agreement spans a robust 19-year period, encompassing upgrades to four control centers and 21 towers distributed throughout the country. Liz Porter, the President of Leidos Health and Civil Sector, reflects on their partnership, stating, “The confidence we have built over the last two decades with KAN is invaluable. The airspace over Kazakhstan plays a pivotal role in international flight paths, and this upgrade bolsters the reliability and safety of the nation’s air traffic management.”
Future projections by the Kazakh government indicate that by the year 2030, the annual passenger traffic within the country is poised to increase dramatically, reaching approximately 26 million travelers, a significant jump from nearly 15 million. Additionally, there are plans to more than double the existing civil aircraft fleet and introduce 81 new international destinations. Given this backdrop, Leidos' operational expertise in safely navigating flights both domestically and globally places them in an advantageous position to efficiently modernize Kazakhstan’s air traffic infrastructure.
Notably, Kazakhstan currently boasts a flight safety rating of 82%, far exceeding the international average of 70.8%, as reported by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This statistic underscores the competence and readiness of the existing air traffic control systems and highlights the role of this new upgrade in further enhancing safety and operational capacity.
In summary, the collaboration between Leidos and Kazaeronavigatsia marks a historic step towards bolstering the aviation infrastructure of Kazakhstan. By integrating cutting-edge technologies and frameworks, Kazakhstan aims to remain at the forefront of air traffic management, ready to face the challenges of a rapidly evolving aviation landscape while ensuring passenger safety and operational excellence.
