Experience STEAM Education This Spring at Laurus International School's Spring School 2026!

STEAM Spring School 2026: An Engaging Experience for Elementary Students

As the spring season approaches, Laurus International School of Science, the only science-focused international school in Japan, is excited to announce the opening of its unique program, STEAM Spring School 2026. Scheduled from March 23 to March 27, this immersive five-day experience invites elementary students aged 6 to 11, not just current Laurus students but also those from outside the school. This program is carefully designed to encourage children to learn about the wonders of nature while developing their own questions and transforming ideas into tangible projects.

The focus of the curriculum is on Biomimicry—a theme that encourages students to draw inspiration from nature. Participants will work on observing natural structures and mechanisms, uncovering principles, and evolving their own innovative ideas through hands-on projects. From design to production, children will experience the joy of creation and the satisfaction of accomplishment, solidifying their understanding through practical application.

Why Choose STEAM Education?

STEAM—which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics—has gained global recognition as an educational approach that emphasizes critical thinking and creativity. Rather than merely acquiring knowledge, it encourages learners to think critically, create, and present their ideas. At Laurus, this holistic educational philosophy is paramount in developing future innovators. Engaging with these principles early on nurtures a mindset that is vital for the challenges of tomorrow.

Program Overview

The agenda for the STEAM Spring School 2026 is packed with exciting activities:

  • - Day 1 (Monday): Start off with ice-breaking activities to build comfort among participants while learning the foundational concepts of biomimicry. Students will explore how nature resolves issues, finding inspiration for their inventions.
  • - Day 2 (Tuesday): A field trip to Ueno Zoo! This on-site experience allows students to observe the physical structure and functioning of various animals. These observations create a bridge to their own inventive ideas.
  • - Day 3 (Wednesday): Students will transform their observations into blueprints. Using their insights, they will sketch and plan their designs. A special workshop led by filmmaker Yuta Ikeya will deepen their understanding of the relationship between nature and technology.
  • - Day 4 (Thursday): It’s time to bring designs to life! Students will create prototypes, refining their ideas into physical products.
  • - Day 5 (Friday): The culmination of the program, the Spring Inventors Expo, will allow students to showcase their creations. They'll present their inventions in English, sharing their learning journey with peers and celebrating the culmination of their hard work.

Special Activities

To enrich the learning experience, STEAM Spring School 2026 offers unique activities:

  • - Field Trip to Ueno Zoo: A hands-on observation allows students to grasp the workings of nature. By pondering questions like “Why does it take this shape?” and “How does it function?”, they cultivate scientific inquiry. This engagement with real-life organisms is essential for igniting creativity and curiosity.
  • - Special Session with Guest Speakers: On Day 3, a designer/engineer from the field of media and design will host a unique session focused on the intersection of nature and technology. Examples of how movements in nature can be interpreted through sensors and turned into sound will be discussed. This moment is perfect for students to learn how to observe critically and expand their inventive ideas.
