Discovering Nature Through the Takao Green High School Program
In the serene environment of the Takao 100-Year Forest located in Hachioji, Tokyo, students are embarking on an extraordinary journey of discovery through the Takao Green High School program. Established by Sagawa Express in 2025, this initiative aims to provide local middle and high school students with immersive environmental education experiences that transcend classroom learning.
Students from six schools in the Hachioji area participate in this program, diving into their interests by studying various aspects of the ecosystem, including aquatic life, insects, birds, and plants. Over the course of the year, they engage in hands-on field studies, guided by experts who support their investigations. Each outing into the forest allows students to observe the natural world up close, gaining a deeper appreciation for its beauty and complexity.
During their fieldwork, students have taken part in a variety of activities, such as:
- - Searching for Creatures: Wading knee-deep in water to discover living organisms and observe their natural behaviors.
- - Studying Vegetation: Investigating the plant life in areas untouched by human influence, which allows for insights into natural ecosystems.
- - Using Camera Traps: Setting up sensor cameras to capture wildlife activity, enabling them to witness the forest’s inhabitants in action.
This hands-on approach helps students understand not only the richness of nature but also its interdependent systems and the importance of conservation. The program involves approximately ten field studies each year, culminating in a presentation event held in March at Sagawa Express’s Tokyo headquarters. During this event, students showcase the results of their year-long research through self-created slides, sharing insights about their observations, analysis, and the current state of the natural environment in their region.
The Takao 100-Year Forest is more than just a corporate-owned woodland; it serves as a critical space for future generations to engage with nature, develop critical thinking skills, and deepen their understanding of environmental issues. Sagawa Express is committed to continuing this program into 2026, reinforcing its dedication to community collaboration and empowering participants to take an active role in environmental stewardship.
Students enthusiastically engage in plant research, often receiving guidance from facilitators on identifying species and understanding their ecological roles. The excitement reaches a peak as they review footage from camera traps, which capture various animals in their natural habitat. These moments not only foster a love for nature but also inspire a sense of responsibility towards its preservation.
As students reflect on their experiences, many express newfound interests and a desire to explore nature further. The Takao Green High School program exemplifies how educational experiences outside the traditional classroom setting can profoundly impact young minds and inspire them to become advocates for environmental awareness.
