Google and Skylo Revolutionize Connectivity with New Pixel Devices and Smartwatch
In a groundbreaking announcement,
Google alongside
Skylo Technologies unveiled significant advancements in satellite connectivity. The Pixel 10 Series and the revolutionary
Pixel Watch 4 were introduced to the world, showcasing features that redefine communication standards.
The Pixel Watch 4 stands out as the world's first smartwatch equipped with integrated, standards-based satellite communications. Powered by Skylo's commercial Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) and Qualcomm's cutting-edge Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Wearable Platforms, this smartwatch is capable of standalone emergency messaging, eliminating the need for a phone or cellular plan. Parthsarathi Trivedi, CEO and co-founder of Skylo Technologies, expressed, "This launch isn't just a new feature — it redefines what's possible with satellite connectivity in everyday devices."
The integration of satellite connectivity in the Pixel 10 Series follows the success of the Pixel 9, which was recognized as the best smartphone at the Global Mobile Awards during MWC Barcelona 2025. Building upon this momentum, Google's collaboration with Skylo has resulted in even more alluring satellite capabilities that extend to a broader audience.
The Pixel Watch 4 marks a monumental step in technology, being the first device to embed NB-NTN satellite connectivity utilizing Snapdragon W5 Gen 2. This platform is meticulously designed for wearables, presenting users with direct satellite link access. This means that the watch enables connection to emergency services and location sharing straight from the wrist, even in scenarios devoid of cellular support.
John Kehrli, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies Inc., stated, "Integrating Skylo’s satellite service with our Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platforms empowers device makers to provide life-saving connectivity anywhere — without the inconvenience of needing a phone, tower, or terrestrial signal." This move enhances wearables’ potential while enabling users to maintain contact in remote locations or dire circumstances.
The Pixel 10 Series expands Skylo's features across its devices. One of the highlights is the first satellite-based location sharing feature integrated with Android 16. This innovative capability allows users to send their real-time location over Skylo's network even when there is no cellular connection, with recipients seeing a clear satellite icon on the received pin. With the Pixel 10, users can seamlessly stay in touch with loved ones or rapidly reach out to emergency services.
Among the significant features introduced by Skylo for the Pixel series are:
- - Satellite SOS: Direct access to emergency services across select regions including the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia.
- - Location Sharing via Satellite: Allows sending of live locations from remote zones using Google Maps or Find Hub.
- - Satellite Messaging: Available through selected carrier networks, enhancing the overall communication experience.
The reliability of Skylo's satellite network has already contributed to numerous life-saving rescues, whether aiding hikers lost in the wilderness or assisting victims of roadside accidents. This network has adeptly enabled satellite SOS capabilities on the Google Pixel 9 series since August 2024, demonstrating its effectiveness in crucial situations.
The Pixel 10 Series, comprising the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL along with the Pixel Watch 4, are ready for pre-order starting from August 20 at google.com/store and various authorized retailers across the EU, Canada, the United States, including Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Alaska, as well as in Australia.
