Bird.com Secures $450 Million Funding
In a groundbreaking move, Bird.com, a leader in AI communication infrastructure, has completed a significant $450 million debt financing led by J.P. Morgan, Capital One, and Citi. This funding, which includes a term loan of $400 million and a revolving credit facility of $50 million, is poised to enhance Bird's capabilities to serve AI agents effectively.
The freshly revamped platform, featuring the “Agentic Harness,” enables AI agents to seamlessly integrate with the world. This innovative tool empowers these agents to send messages, make calls, and manage their emails independently, thus streamlining their communication tasks without the need for custom integrations. This development comes at a pivotal time as Bird accelerates its expansion efforts across the United States.
In the fiscal year of 2025, Bird achieved an EBITDA of $165 million, primarily due to large-scale automation implemented throughout the company. This growth marks a transition from a workforce that once exceeded 1,000 employees to a streamlined team of 120, attributed to enhanced operational efficiency rather than market exit. Automation has permitted increased productivity while significantly reducing costs for clients, with some services offered at up to 90% less than competitors.
Robert Vis, CEO and founder of Bird.com, emphasized the shift in the global economy towards automation and how it has been a driving force for their business model. “We’ve demonstrated how automation can work effectively,” he noted, “not to cut jobs, but to enhance productivity. The reduction in staff has simply been a consequence of that.”
Vis pointed out, “Half of the applications on your phone rely on our infrastructure, yet we manage this with far fewer employees than before due to our automated systems.”
The recent funding deal represents a recapitalization via a dividend distribution, providing liquidity to current shareholders, including both current and former employees who own stakes in the company. Seven banks participated in this financing round, with J.P. Morgan at the helm as the lead arranger, along with Capital One and Citi serving as co-arrangers.
As Shikha Goyal-Allain, Managing Director of J.P. Morgan’s commercial banking sector, highlighted, “We’re witnessing considerable growth in agentic AI, and expect this trend to accelerate as these agents facilitate transactions on behalf of users. Bird has cultivated a blend of scale, a lean operational model, and sustained profitability.”
The newly introduced Agentic Harness layer by Bird facilitates AI agents in utilizing its suite of products through standard protocols, granting comprehensive access. This allows them to create, update, and manage their own information within Bird's systems independently, removing the need for human intervention. Previously, operational tasks that required manual handling by developers—like message delivery variations per country—can now be managed entirely by AI agents.
This full-end control that agents wield with the Harness sets Bird apart from rivals like Twilio, which currently provides more limited access. Additionally, Bird's platform seamlessly interfaces with multiple leading AI models, offering significant flexibility to its clients.
Vis articulated the essential need for AI agents to interact with the world effectively, stating, “The world is replete with AI agents capable of reasoning and decision-making. However, without the ability to communicate through emails, SMS, or calls, they cannot achieve their potential. We’ve created the infrastructure that enables AI to act in the real world.”
