Singapore and Malaysia Dominate the Leading ASEAN University Rankings by AppliedEdu 2027
In a recent announcement, the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Sunway University have secured the top positions among public and private universities in the ASEAN region, respectively, according to the AppliedEdu University Rankings for 2027. This marks the third consecutive year that NUS has achieved the top ranking among public universities, while Sunway University has maintained its position as the leading private institution for the fourth year in a row.
The rankings revealed that Malaysian universities have excelled, claiming seven out of the ten top spots in the private university category and five out of ten in the public university category. In fact, Malaysia topped the charts with the highest number of institutions listed in the top 50 of each category, boasting 21 private and 16 public universities.
The 2027 rankings represent the most comprehensive examination of the higher education system in Southeast Asia conducted by AppliedEdu thus far. A total of 316 universities from nine ASEAN countries participated in the ranking, an increase of 33% from last year, which only evaluated 237 institutions. The results are based on over 100,000 verified student responses and recommendations from academic representatives, along with data verification from the respective universities.
The rankings were unveiled during the AppliedEduXChange 2026 event, which brought together over 150 university leaders under the theme “Beyond Skills: Building Employable, Industry-Ready Graduates.” “Recognition of Sunway University as the best private university in ASEAN for the fourth consecutive year reflects pride not only for our university but for Malaysia as a whole. We aim for every graduate to leave with knowledge, confidence, and the experience necessary for a successful career and to contribute positively to society,” said Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President and Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University. “This acknowledgment inspires us to continually enhance the quality of education we offer.”
What Sets the AppliedEdu Rankings Apart
The methodology employed by AppliedEdu places significant emphasis on the quality of teaching and learning, which accounts for 40% of the overall score. An additional 20% for private universities and 15% for public universities is based on graduate employment opportunities. Combined, these measures constitute 60% and 55% of the final score for private and public universities, respectively, suggesting that the quality of education and graduate outcomes are central to the ranking.
Students directly participated in the assessment process, providing their insights regarding teaching quality, infrastructure, and campus life. Public and private universities were evaluated separately, utilizing distinct weighting that reflects their unique objectives. Other criteria include research activities, institutional reputation, community engagement, and internationalization, which collectively recognize the diverse contributions universities make toward student and societal development.
“Rankings should not just recognize achievements; they should also drive improvement,” says Mandy Mok, Founder and CEO of AppliedEdu. “They must help universities bolster their strengths, identify areas needing change, and make informed decisions that yield better outcomes for students and the communities they serve.”
