California REALTORS® Extend Their Support to Wildfire Victims
In a commendable effort to assist victims of the recent devastating wildfires in Southern California, the California Association of REALTORS® (C.A.R.) has taken a proactive step by publishing an open letter across numerous newspapers statewide. This letter is aimed at providing crucial information for those impacted, helping them navigate the challenging weeks and months ahead as they recover from substantial losses.
The open letter appears in over 45 local newspapers, including prestigious publications such as the California editions of The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, as well as the Los Angeles Times, Pasadena Star News, and Mercury News, among others. To ensure inclusivity, a Spanish version of the letter has also been distributed, appearing in La Opinion and other Spanish-language newspapers, as well as in their digital formats.
C.A.R. President Heather Ozur expressed heartfelt sympathy and support for those whose lives have been disrupted, stating, "The devastation caused by the recent wildfires in Southern California is beyond words. Our hearts are heavy for those whose lives have been upended, so many of whom are now facing unimaginable losses." The letter embodies both compassion and a commitment to rally alongside those dealing with the aftermath of these catastrophic events.
In the letter, Ozur highlights the inspiring courage of first responders, commending their relentless efforts to protect life and property. Alongside acknowledgment of the challenges that lie ahead, she emphasizes the REALTORS®' commitment to assist with recovery and rebuilding. They aim to empower victims with knowledge of their rights and to encourage vigilance against potential predatory practices during this vulnerable period.
The letter outlines significant concerns for fire-affected homeowners, urging them to be aware of potential price gouging, fraudulent transactions, and unsolicited offers that may undervalue their properties. It serves as a vital call to action for those impacted to stay informed and alert during their recovery process.
Furthermore, readers are informed about available resources, including financial support of up to $1,000 through the REALTORS® Relief Foundation. This fund is designed to provide housing-related assistance to individuals recovering from natural disasters, with applications open until April 30 at

For additional support, the letter encourages homeowners to explore Proposition 19, which allows for property tax relief by enabling the transfer of the taxable value of a damaged home to a new property in California. This measure was introduced to assist wildfire survivors in rebuilding their lives more seamlessly.
In closing, the letter emphasizes a community-driven recovery effort, inviting all Californians to play their part in supporting their neighbors through volunteering, donations, or simply providing a helping hand. The letter wraps up with a resounding message of resilience, stating, "Our recovery has to be a collective effort, and we will get through this terrible disaster together. Our resilience is one of the defining features of our great state."
