The Japan Frescoball Association (JFBA), dedicated to promoting the communication design sport of Frescoball within Japan, has recently unveiled a dedicated web page for the upcoming "Frescoball Rikuzen Takata Cup 2025," scheduled to take place on August 9-10, 2025. This event aims to not only showcase the exciting sport but also to raise awareness around disaster prevention through unique collaborative efforts.

The main slogan for the event is "Connect, Rally. Connect, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation." This concept encourages Frescoball players to become ambassadors for disaster awareness, emphasizing the importance of self-protection as well as the safety of others when returning to their communities after enjoying beach activities throughout the year.

In collaboration with the Iwate University Sanriku Committee, JFBA has developed initiatives focused on learning about disaster preparedness from the perspective of Frescoball athletes. One of the highlights will be a selection of recommended disaster prevention items to bring to the beach. Among them is the beloved Brazilian beach item, the “Kanga,” widely used by domestic players, which serves as a first aid tool for injured individuals. This content will be an essential feature not just for beach sports athletes but also for families enjoying seaside outings.

Moreover, during the event, members from Iwate University will make presentations on disaster prevention measures, sharing insights and perspectives that can help protect lives and strengthen community resilience.

In addition to promoting disaster awareness, the Frescoball Rikuzen Takata Cup has received support from the Tohoku Regional Development Bureau, being part of the 'Waterfront Community Revitalization Project.' This initiative, focused on rejuvenating communities affected by disasters, aligns perfectly with the event’s objectives to inspire and empower through Frescoball, utilizing the waterfront as a central point of community engagement.

Frescoball is a unique beach sport originating from Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, back in 1945. It’s characterized by cooperation rather than competition as players work together to maintain a rally instead of competing against each other. The playing duration is five minutes, maintaining a distance of 7 meters. Due to its collaborative nature, it’s often referred to as a "sport of empathy." As of July 2025, there are 27 JFBA certified regional clubs and 6 recognized student groups across Japan, fostering local communities through this engaging sport.

Established in 2013, the Japan Frescoball Association actively promotes the sport's appeal and has set ambitious plans to establish regional clubs in all 47 prefectures across Japan by 2025. This commitment ensures that more people can experience the joys of Frescoball while also enhancing community bonds through shared learning and activities.
