Exploring IHI's Strategies for Developing an Ammonia Fuel Value Chain

Seminar on IHI's Ammonia Fuel Value Chain Development

On May 21, 2026, a significant seminar hosted by the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will feature Takashi Fujimori, a senior technical advisor at IHI Corporation, who specializes in resources, energy, and environmental business sectors. The seminar focuses on the construction of a fuel ammonia value chain and the corresponding business strategies pursued by IHI.

Ammonia is emerging as a key energy source in the transition towards a decarbonized society, prized for its excellent characteristics as a hydrogen energy vector with zero CO2 emissions during combustion. According to Japan’s 7th Strategic Energy Plan, the nation aims to create an annual demand for 30 million tons of ammonia by the year 2050.

IHI is actively developing technology and business frameworks for the entire ammonia value chain, encompassing manufacturing, transportation, and usage. Already, several technologies concerning gas turbines, boilers, and internal combustion engines have reached the phase of social implementation.

During the seminar, participants can expect a comprehensive discussion on:

1. Energy Transition Towards Decarbonization
(1) Energy Choices for Decarbonization
(2) Future Energy Strategies in Japan and the World
(3) The Role of Thermal Power Generation

2. Efforts for Constructing the Ammonia Value Chain
(1) Manufacturing Technologies
(2) Transportation and Storage Technologies
(3) Utilization Technologies

3. Current Status and Future Prospects of Ammonia Power Generation Technology
(1) Gas Turbine Power Generation
(2) Coal Co-Firing Power Generation
(3) Internal Combustion Engine Power Generation

4. Challenges and Future Outlook for Social Implementation
