About the Artist
Born into a family of artisans, Takahiro Tajima is the fifth generation of a lineage dedicated to traditional sculpture. His early exposure to art naturally led him to embrace the world of carving. Throughout his career, Tajima has remained steadfast in his commitment to wood sculpture, combining classical techniques with contemporary practices. In recent years, he has also expanded his repertoire to include drawings, ceramics, and two-dimensional works, creating a diverse and distinctive body of work that pushes the boundaries of artistic expression.
Highlights of 'This Boy'
The exhibition
'This Boy' will feature a selection of wood sculptures characterized by both symbolic forms and delicate textures. Alongside these traditional pieces, new paintings, crafted from water-soluble pastels on watercolor paper, will showcase Tajima’s innovation in two-dimensional art. Each piece is designed to evoke a sense of wonder mingled with humorous undertones, inviting viewers to engage their imagination.
Tajima’s artistic approach masterfully intertwines craftsmanship with memory, lightness with depth. He encourages us to reexamine the nature of sculpture in contemporary society, offering fresh perspectives that resonate well with today's artistic landscape.
The Creativity Behind the Works
Tajima elaborates on his vision:
“When the artifice is stripped away from the innocent shadows, an eerily simple presence emerges. My desire to touch this essence drives me to carve.”
The figures that might be called
'cute' conceal a deeper sincerity — behind their seemingly simplistic forms lies a profound truth, stripped of pretension.
The delicate balance of contradiction — solitude, anger, prayer, tears, confusion, and laughter — reflects the nature of humanity itself, embodied in sculptural form. Tajima sees the essence of sculpture in these opposing forces, presenting a unique narrative that resonates with all viewers.
