Nikko's Innovative Sustainable Welfare Program Makes Debut in 2025

Nikko's 'Rice Field Owner System': Revolutionizing Employee Welfare

Nikko Co., Ltd., established in 1908 in Shirasaki, Ishikawa Prefecture, is taking a bold step toward corporate sustainability with its innovative welfare initiative: the 'Rice Field Owner System'. Set to commence testing in 2025 for its affiliated companies, this program utilizes recycled fertilizer, BONEARTH®, derived from its own tableware. The initiative not only aims to enhance employee welfare but also contributes to the company's commitment to a circular economy.

What is the Rice Field Owner System?

The essence of the 'Rice Field Owner System' revolves around engaging employees in meaningful agricultural experiences, including rice planting and harvesting activities. This initiative allows participants to connect with nature and interact with local communities while fostering a deeper understanding of agricultural practices. The harvested rice can be distributed among employees and their families as a part of the welfare benefits, or packaged in original designs bearing the company logo for use as novelty items or commemorative gifts. This approach can also serve as a promotional tool, significantly enhancing employee engagement and showcasing the company's commitment to sustainability initiatives.

Furthermore, this initiative addresses agricultural sustainability challenges amidst a backdrop of declining rice consumption, an aging farmer population, unstable harvest yields due to climate change, and labor shortages. Because the program guarantees a fixed payment regardless of the yield, it provides stable support to farmers, creating a financially sustainable partnership rather than a simple purchasing transaction.

Testing Phase and Future Plans

This year, the initiative will undergo a structured testing phase focusing on the setup and operational flow, conducted at Mitani Sangyo Co., Ltd., a company affiliated with Nikko. Based on the insights gained, a full-scale rollout to external businesses is planned for 2026.

Experiencing Agriculture First-Hand

In early May, employees from both Mitani Sangyo and Nikko participated in rice planting activities at the 'BONEARTH®-utilized rice fields'. Many participants shared that it had been decades since their last rice planting experience, leading to a joyful and memorable day filled with laughter, despite some challenges with their footing in the muddy fields. The shared activity fostered natural communication among employees who typically have little interaction, with many expressing feelings of nostalgia and gratitude for the precious time spent connecting.

As the seasons change, an upcoming rice harvesting event is also scheduled, promising continuous engagement and new insights throughout the year.

Building a New Community

The Rice Field Owner System not only serves corporate welfare and promotes SDGs but plays a crucial role in supporting agriculture as a whole. With hopes of inviting local companies to join and form a community where agriculture, the environment, and businesses can mutually support each other, Nikko envisions nurturing this initiative into a thriving ecosystem.

Looking Ahead

In 2026, Nikko expects to formally commence applications from external companies. Interested parties are encouraged to reach out for materials and individual consultations regarding participation opportunities.
