CIL and AM Green Target Largest Renewable Energy Contract in India
CIL and AM Green Aim for a Major Renewable Energy Supply
In May 2025, a significant collaboration was announced between Coal India Limited (CIL) and AM Green, aimed at establishing one of the world's largest renewable energy contracts. The agreement, if materialized, will see CIL supply up to 4,500 megawatts (MW) of carbon-free energy to support AM Green's green ammonia plants in India. This initiative is set against the backdrop of India’s ambition to enhance its energy matrix and transition towards net-zero emissions.
On May 7, 2025, both entities signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) that outlines their long-term commitment to renewable energy supply and procurement. In this ambitious project, it is estimated that around 2,500 to 3,000 MW will come from solar energy, while wind energy is expected to contribute between 1,500 and 2,000 MW. The total investment for this venture is projected at approximately INR 25,000 million.
Potential sites for wind energy projects are being explored across southern states of India, and sunny regions like Gujarat and Rajasthan are considered for solar plants. To ensure a steady supply of green energy for AM Green's operations, these renewable sources will be integrated with pumped hydro storage systems.
P. M. Prasad, President of CIL, expressed that "While coal remains our pillar to meet the growing energy demands of India in the short term, our plans include a proactive role in building a greener, more sustainable future. This aligns with our commitment to becoming the country’s integrated energy provider." AM Green, spearheaded by the founders of Greenko Group, aims to produce 5 million tons per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030—equating to about 1 MTPA of green hydrogen. This production is substantial as it represents one-fifth of India’s goal under the National Hydrogen Mission.
Anil Chalamalasetty, founder of the Greenko Group and AM Green based in Hyderabad, voiced enthusiasm regarding the partnership with CIL, stating, "We are pleased to collaborate with CIL on one of the largest carbon-free renewable energy supply contracts. Our goal is to become one of the world’s most competitive producers of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other green molecules."
The MOU was signed by Sudarsan Bora, General Manager of Engineering and Management at CIL, alongside Shatanshu Agrawal, Senior Vice President of Business Development at AM Green. Notable figures in attendance included P. M. Prasad, CIL President; Mukesh Choudhary, CIL’s Marketing Director; and Anil Kumar, General Manager of Management and Solar Energy at CIL.
About AM Green
AM Green is established by the founders of the Greenko Group, recognized as one of India's leading renewable energy conglomerates, boasting extensive experience in constructing, owning, and operating renewable assets. Currently, Greenko is developing large-scale closed-loop pumped storage projects to provide 24/7 energy at competitive rates.
AM Green emerges as a new platform emphasizing energy transition focused on producing sustainable aviation fuel, green ammonia, green hydrogen, green chemicals, and biofuels. These initiatives will be structured through specialized subsidiaries, ensuring technological collaboration and the provision of services.
AM Green is set to lead the production of eco-friendly chemicals and biochemicals, as well as a firm commitment to scaling green ammonia production across various locations in India. Their goal of achieving 5 MTPA of green ammonia by 2030—equivalent to 1 MTPA of green hydrogen—will significantly contribute to global decarbonization efforts and support India's aspirations for net-zero emissions.
