Prime Therapeutics Welcomes Katie Payne as Chief External Affairs Officer
On November 13, 2025, Prime Therapeutics LLC (often referred to as Prime) made a significant announcement regarding its leadership. The company appointed Katie Payne, a highly experienced communications and public affairs veteran, as its Chief External Affairs Officer. This strategic move highlights Prime's unwavering commitment to advocating for policies that foster innovation, transparency, accessibility, and affordability within the complex prescription drug supply chain.
Katie Payne brings over two decades of expertise in the realms of health policy, drug pricing, and advocacy communications to her new role. Before joining Prime, she served as the Chief Public Affairs Officer and Head of Advocacy at the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA). In her previous position, she skillfully represented America’s pharmacy benefit companies, further strengthening her foundation in the public affairs landscape.
Payne’s appointment is particularly noteworthy as it comes at a time when the complexities of the healthcare system challenge many organizations. In her newly created executive position at Prime, she will lead the integrated external affairs organization. This encompasses public affairs, state and federal government relations, policy insights, and corporate as well as client communications. The goal is to shape relevant policy and enhance relationships across the healthcare continuum.
Mostafa Kamal, the CEO and President of Prime, stated, “In a healthcare landscape that has become increasingly complex, Prime is redefining what it means to be a pharmacy benefits partner by delivering savings, simplicity, and support that put people first. With a proven mastery of public affairs, health policy, and communications, Katie will amplify what makes Prime’s model different.”
Payne’s background is marked by significant achievements in corporate communications and public policy across various pharmaceutical companies. She has directed impactful initiatives that focus on corporate affairs, government relations, and brand reputation management. Her experience includes leading national advocacy campaigns and managing strategic communications about regulatory, legislative, and market changes.
Expressing her enthusiasm about joining Prime, Payne remarked, “As a purpose-driven pharmacy benefit manager independently owned by eighteen not-for-profit Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans, Prime has the scale, autonomy, and community focus to set a new industry standard. I'm thrilled to help Prime tell its unique story, and I look forward to contributing to our mission of promoting transparency and trust in the pharmacy benefit space, while advancing affordability and access for millions of people.”
Katie Payne holds a master's degree in health communications, as well as a bachelor’s in writing and business management from Johns Hopkins University. This academic background complements her extensive professional experience, signifying her as a valuable asset to Prime.
