Masakazu Kitayama's Art Exhibition 'TYPOGRAFFiTi 4-5' to Open in Fukuoka

Masakazu Kitayama's 'TYPOGRAFFiTi 4-5' Exhibition in Fukuoka

YUGEN Gallery Fukuoka, located in central Fukuoka, will host the highly anticipated art exhibition 'TYPOGRAFFiTi 4-5' by the prominent graphic designer Masakazu Kitayama, starting December 13, 2025. The exhibition will be held in two phases: the first phase runs from December 13 to December 25, and the second phase from January 7 to January 19, 2026.

Masakazu Kitayama has made a name for himself in the world of visual arts, particularly known for his artistic collaborations within the music industry, working on album artworks for notable names such as Cornelius and Fujifabric. His innovative concept of 'TYPOGRAFFITI'—a blend of typography and graffiti—focuses on creating three-dimensional artworks that carry powerful social messages. This year marks the 10th anniversary of this unique series, which debuted in 2015.

The exhibition will feature around 20 pieces, including the latest works unveiled at Tokyo's AL Gallery during 'TYPOGRAFFiTi 5 - letters, words, voices -', as well as significant pieces from 'TYPOGRAFFiTi 4' released in 2023. Additionally, attendees will be treated to a collaborative video artwork created in partnership with local type designer Hitoshi Nagao in celebration of the exhibition.

Among the iconic pieces included is 'NO WAR', a compelling statement piece that arises from the ongoing conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and the Gaza conflict. Created from aluminum sheets cut and shaped with profound craftsmanship, this artwork emphasizes that words can convey meanings beyond their literal interpretations, resonating deeply in the current global climate.

Kitayama embodies the spirit of resistance with his poignant messages, challenging societal absurdities through his art. This exhibition will also feature interactive talks with well-known guests including Tomoshi Okuda, pastor at Higashi Yahata Christian Church, and type designer Hitoshi Nagao. Local eateries, NEU!ALBUM (a dining bar) and 'Mizuki no San' (a delicatessen), will also showcase their offerings, creating a rich cultural space for discussion and reflection as we transition into a new year.

Art enthusiasts and the general public alike are invited to explore this thought-provoking exhibition and engage with the ideas articulated through Kitayama's art. For those interested in purchasing his works, they will also be available for viewing on the YUGEN Gallery's official online store starting with the exhibition opening.
