In September 2026, a new Active Method Yotsuya Campus will be opening, bringing with it an innovative approach to English education in Japan. Developed by i GO Corporation, the Active Method combines typing practice with English language learning, making it a unique offering for children eager to enhance their language skills. As of December 2025, over 100 Active Method schools have started across the nation, with plans for further expansion in the near future.

Innovative Approach to English Education

The Active Method capitalizes on the recent overhaul of English education in Japanese elementary schools. As English became a formal subject over the last few years, fundamental changes have taken root. Students in grades 5 and 6 now receive 70 hours of instruction each year, emphasizing all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The new curriculum mirrors the standards of junior high school, ensuring a seamless transition for students.

To adapt to these changes, the number of vocabulary words taught in junior high has increased from 1,200 to between 1,600 and 1,800. Additionally, programs such as mandatory programming classes are now integrated into the elementary school curriculum, reflecting a transformative shift in the learning landscape. As of the 2024 academic year, university entrance exams will also align with these updated educational policies.

The Active Method’s Unique Learning Strategy

The strength of the Active Method lies in its ability to facilitate rapid vocabulary acquisition through typing. Unlike traditional writing, where students may take their time, typing allows them to practice English words at speeds up to 10 times faster.
