Castillo Engineering Partners with Northern Sun Energy for Major Solar Projects
In an exciting move towards enhancing renewable energy infrastructure, Castillo Engineering has been chosen by Northern Sun Energy to provide comprehensive design and engineering services for a series of solar projects across New York and Louisiana. This partnership aims to deliver a combined total output of 18 megawatts (MW), including one community solar project and two installations at a U.S. Army base.
The flagship project is a 5 MW community solar initiative located in Troy, New York. This project is noteworthy not only for its size but also for its technology; it employs a fixed tilt racking system, which optimizes solar energy capture and efficiency. It was recently commissioned, marking a significant contribution to the state’s renewable energy goals. New York has led the nation in community solar capacity, boasting over 1.8 gigawatts (GW) of operational capacity—double that of any other state—reinforcing its commitment to generating 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
In Louisiana, Castillo Engineering will also assist in the development of two additional solar facilities on the Fort Johnson U.S. Army installation. Each of these facilities is projected to output 6.5 MW and will similarly utilize fixed tilt technology, with completion expected in the first quarter of 2025.
Chris Balogh, Vice President at Northern Sun Energy, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "Onyx Renewables is a highly respected developer with a commitment to quality. We are excited to partner with Castillo Engineering once more, having successfully completed the Troy project on time and within budget."
The U.S. Army's strategic commitment to sustainability is evident through its goal of transitioning to 100% carbon pollution-free electricity across its installations by 2030. With 45% of the Army's energy already sourced from carbon-free means, Castillo’s input in these projects supports the Army’s ambitious climate goals. The forthcoming projects will not only aid in achieving these goals but will also establish a more secure and reliable energy supply, enhancing the operational efficiency of the Army base.
Christopher Castillo, CEO of Castillo Engineering, highlighted the significance of these projects, saying, "We’re thrilled to collaborate with Northern Sun Energy again. Our mission is to navigate the complexities of energy regulations and transform them into workable clean energy solutions, accelerating carbon emission reductions."
