Vivienne Sato's Exhibition: Proof of Absence at YUGEN Gallery Fukuoka
From October 4 to 22, 2025, YUGEN Gallery Fukuoka will present the exhibition "Proof of Absence" by the multifaceted artist Vivienne Sato. Located in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, this event is a remarkable opportunity to experience Sato's unique artistic expression that transcends traditional boundaries.
Vivienne Sato identifies as not just an artist, but also as a filmmaker, theater practitioner, and drag queen. Her work is distinguished by a keen ability to analyze contemporary society through diverse artistic lenses. Sato's creations span multiple domains, including visual arts, architecture, urban studies, and cultural analysis, marked by a critical and experimental approach centered on the notion of contemporaneity.
Gallery-goers can expect to encounter a range of intriguing works, including pieces inspired by the Rorschach test—a psychological test commonly used in psychoanalysis. These flat artworks serve as reflections on perception and reality, inviting viewers to engage deeply with the themes that Sato explores. Additionally, Sato will feature three-dimensional works that merge fragments of Franz Kafka's late narratives with tarantula exoskeletons, showcasing her innovative use of materials and themes.
One highlight of the exhibition is Sato's collection of artworks based on spider webs and net patterns. This body of work pays homage to her own artistic philosophy, illustrating her continuous tension between past and present. Sato explains, "As an artist who began creating intricate drawings in my teens, there was a fear of empty spaces inherent in Western painting. This perspective feels distant now, but I acknowledge my past and seek to infuse my earlier works with lifeblood from the present. I believe both my present self and my future self are deeply interconnected with the influences of the past."
Through her art, Sato brings to light aspects that are often overlooked by contemporary values, skillfully addressing the dissonance between thought and reality. Her sharp commentary encourages audiences to reflect on profound truths and engage with the essential nature of existence. This exhibition represents not just a continuation of her past expressions but also a transformative leap toward new realms of creation—an experience that art enthusiasts should not miss.
