CTA Construction Secures Contract for Melrose's New Fire Station, Enhancing Safety and Efficiency

CTA Construction Awarded New Fire Station Contract in Melrose, MA

CTA Construction Managers, a prominent construction management firm located in Waltham, Massachusetts, has recently secured a pivotal contract for the construction of the new Melrose Fire Station – Engine 2. This new facility signifies a crucial investment by the City of Melrose, aimed at modernizing public safety infrastructure and enhancing emergency response.

A New Era for Melrose Fire Department

Mayor Jen Grigoraitis expressed her enthusiasm about the project, stating, "The City of Melrose is excited to break ground on the new Engine 2 building for our Melrose firefighters. I am grateful for the support of Melrose voters for the public safety buildings debt exclusion in 2023." The mayor acknowledged the collective effort of taxpayers, elected officials, city staff, and community members, emphasizing that this moment marks an exciting new chapter for both the Melrose Fire Department and the community.

The new Engine 2 station has been specifically designed to accommodate modern firefighting needs, promoting rapid emergency response, firefighter wellness, and long-term operational efficiency. The existing fire station is outdated and has significant limitations in housing larger fire engines and advanced emergency equipment. As Denise M. Gaffey from the Office of Planning and Community Development noted, the current facility’s constrained apparatus bays and limited storage capacity have led to inefficiencies that can compromise the emergency response readiness.

Features of the New Facility

CTA Construction Managers will oversee all construction phases, including demolishing the existing structure. Pat Tompkins, Principal at CTA, stated, "We are honored to partner with the city to deliver a modern fire station that not only enhances emergency response capabilities but also provides a safe, efficient, and resilient environment for firefighters."

The new fire station will be an all-electric, net-zero energy-ready facility that aligns with the City’s sustainability goals, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption. It will incorporate features that focus on first responders' health and wellness, including improved living quarters and areas for decontamination, resulting in reduced carcinogen exposure. Glen Gollrad from the architectural firm Dore + Whittier highlighted that the design aims to support firefighter well-being while ensuring operational efficiency.

Brian Fors from Vertex, the city’s owner project manager, emphasized the importance of durability and low lifecycle costs of the building, ensuring it serves the community for decades while adhering to Melrose's energy initiatives.

Looking Ahead

With construction expected to begin in the coming weeks, the project aims for completion by Fall 2027. The new Melrose Fire Station represents a significant commitment from the city towards improving public safety facilities and providing firefighters with the resources they need to serve the community effectively.
