Global Video Media Forum: Enhancing Collaboration and Voices of the Global South

On December 6, 2024, the 12th Global Video Media Forum (VMF) took place in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and empowerment for media voices from the Global South. This noteworthy gathering brought together approximately 200 representatives from 87 media organizations, representing over 60 countries and regions. Known as a historical trading port and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Quanzhou served as an inspiring backdrop for this significant event.

The forum, organized by the CCTV Video News Agency, part of the China Media Group (CMG), carried the motto “Intelligence Without Borders, Vision Beyond Horizons.” It sought to address the application and governance of artificial intelligence (AI) in media, aiming to establish new platforms for exchange and contributing to a promising future for digital civilization in the Global South.

CMG President Shen Haixiong, alongside other distinguished guests, announced the "Joint Initiative for Media Dialogue and Cooperation of the Global South," one of the forum's most significant outcomes. This initiative, jointly proposed by key organizations including CMG, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, and the Arab States Broadcasting Union, aims to create a narrative system for the Global South, amplifying media voices while promoting mutual learning and exchange to enhance the collective prosperity of civilizations in this region.

Moreover, the forum highlighted cultural exchange efforts, such as the unveiling of a global promotional video for CMG’s upcoming "Spring Festival Gala 2025." This iconic event has been a staple of the Chinese New Year since 1983 and is known worldwide for its role in promoting Chinese culture abroad. Additionally, four high-profile films and documentaries were showcased, offering a rich insight into the daily lives of the Chinese people, China’s commitment to environmental protection, and its advancements in space exploration.

As part of its ongoing efforts, CMG also announced plans to continue its film and television screening initiatives in Central Asia, Europe, and America throughout 2025, offering global audiences a comprehensive view of China. In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, CMG’s China Global Television Network launched the “China Up Close” campaign, integrating various media formats. This initiative invites both Chinese and international reporters and influencers to experience China’s dynamic culture and socio-economic development firsthand.

In collaboration with Quanzhou, which historically served as the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road, CMG initiated the "International Communication Season," blending stories of this ancient trade route into modern narratives to bolster China’s global influence and communication capabilities. The forum also featured the CMG Experience Zone, showcasing state-of-the-art 3D audio technology applications that drew significant interest.

Various sessions included discussions on how new technologies empower media, interpersonal communication, and cultural exchange as key drivers for international dialogue. Panelists explored topics such as the governance of AI in media, creating innovative communication platforms using smart technologies, and delineating a brighter future for the digital civilizations of the Global South.

This year’s forum not only served as a platform for advancing media collaboration but also helped to establish stronger networks among media professionals committed to elevating the narrative of the Global South and fostering a better understanding among diverse global audiences. The shared experiences and discussions at the event promise a compelling blueprint for future cooperation and dialogue in media sectors across the globe.
