Motor Magazine Corp. Launches Crowdfunding for Unique Fanbook Project

Introducing a Unique Crowdfunding Project by Motor Magazine Corp.

Motor Magazine Corporation, known for its rich history in motorcycle and automotive publication in Japan, is embarking on an exciting new venture: a crowdfunding project for a unique fanbook titled 'Taste of Tsukuba & Freelance Fanbook - King of Grass Race'. This initiative aims to celebrate the vibrant culture and history of Japan's two most significant motorcycle races held at Tsukuba Circuit. The crowdfunding campaign is set to launch on August 1, 2026, and will run until August 31, 2026, with a target of raising 3 million yen.

Background of the Fanbook Initiative

Founded in 1923, Motor Magazine has been at the forefront of motor journalism in Japan, publishing iconic titles such as the monthly 'Automobile' and 'Motor Magazine'. However, the digital age has presented multiple challenges to the print magazine industry, as readers now have various avenues to access information online. With mobile news and social media keeping competition fierce, traditional sales of magazines and books have decreased.

Despite these challenges, there remains a significant demand for unique and valuable printed content. Motor Magazine aims to bridge the gap between avid readers and the content they desire through an innovative approach. By leveraging crowdfunding, they will print only as many copies of the fanbook as are needed, ensuring that dedicated fans get their hands on this specialized publication.

What to Expect from the Fanbook

The fanbook will focus on two major racing events: 'Taste of Tsukuba', Japan’s largest grassroots motorcycle race, which occurs twice a year at the Tsukuba Circuit, and the 'Taste of Freelance', the predecessor that ran from 1990 to 2006. This special fanbook will not only detail the current events but also honor the legacy of Freelance by reprinting articles from the renowned motorcycle publication, 'Bikers Station'. These articles feature in-depth analyses of races, motorcycles, and riders, alongside previously unpublished photographs that capture the vibrant moments of these events.

What’s New in the Crowdfunding Campaign

Motor Magazine’s endeavor into crowdfunding is groundbreaking, indicating a significant shift in how they engage with their audience. Supporters will not only help fund the project but also participate in its creation by suggesting articles they want to see, ensuring the fanbook reflects the community's interests. Various tiers of contributions will reward backers with exciting perks, including acknowledgments in the magazine and exclusive content tailored to their interests.

Fundraising Goals and Rewards

The fundraising campaign aims to gather 3 million yen to cover the production costs of the fanbook. Among the rewards for contributors are:
  • - ¥5,000: A single copy of the fanbook, with contributors’ names included.
  • - ¥14,000: Three copies of the fanbook, with names listed in the publication.
  • - ¥50,000: Pictures of participants from the 2026 Taste of Tsukuba prominently featured alongside three copies of the book.
  • - ¥50,000: Special recognition for participants of the Taste of Freelance event with similar reward options.

Join Us in This Exciting Journey!

The initiative is revitalizing interest in grassroots motorcycle culture by blending digital engineering with the tangible joy of print media. As the editor-in-chief, Yuichi Oya, states, the goal is to preserve the rich history and excitement surrounding these racing events in printed form. Motor Magazine invites fans of motorcycle racing and enthusiasts alike to partake in this unique journey and contribute to a project that celebrates not just races, but the spirit of community amongst riders.
