Doutor Coffee's Commitment to Sustainability
Doutor Coffee, a prominent name in the coffee industry based out of Shibuya, Tokyo, has taken a significant step towards enhancing sustainability in its product offerings. Starting from July 2026, they will introduce eco-friendly packaging for their regular coffee bean products in stores and online, utilizing the innovative gas control technology known as
TiMELESS®. This environmentally-conscious initiative comes in collaboration with
Nagase Industries, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, which acts as the overall distributor for the TiMELESS technology in the coffee sector.
Doutor Coffee has previously incorporated TiMELESS packaging in limited edition coffee sets, such as the
Hatsugama coffee set, and in some of their commercial products. This new initiative aims to make sustainable choices more accessible for customers purchasing everyday coffee at Doutor Coffee shops. By adopting this packaging system, the company intends to advance efforts towards reducing plastic usage and minimizing environmental impact, ultimately supporting a plastic-free initiative.
What is TiMELESS®?
The
TiMELESS® packaging solution, developed by
MIB, a company specialized in packaging materials, ensures the release of carbon dioxide that coffee beans produce after roasting without the need for plastic valves. Traditionally, a plastic degassing valve was used to avoid bag rupture during the sealing process, which posed challenges regarding recycling and the excess use of plastics. The TiMELESS method utilizes a micro-channel design in the package seal, allowing gases to escape naturally while eliminating the need for plastic components. This advancement is expected to enhance production efficiency and reduce environmental burdens significantly.
As part of their sustainable approach, Doutor Coffee will gradually switch some of their regular coffee offerings, including popular blends like Hawaii Kona, to TiMELESS packaging. This transition not only highlights Doutor's commitment to environmentally-friendly practices but also promotes a wider adoption of sustainable packaging in the coffee industry, paving the way for further innovation.
Doutor Coffee and Nagase Industries are dedicated to collaborating closely to elevate the overall sustainability of the coffee sector through the deployment of TiMELESS technology and relevant equipment. This cooperation is pivotal in aiming for broader acceptance of eco-friendly practices in the coffee supply chain.
In the future, customers can expect to find more products using TiMELESS packaging at Doutor Coffee outlets – a move designed to create a more sustainable coffee experience, making it easier for customers to choose environmentally-friendly options in their daily lives.
