Okayama University, a prominent national university based in Okayama City, recently convened the 6th meeting of its initiative called the 'Microbial Explorers' on September 22, 2025. This initiative is designed to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers focused on microbial studies. The meeting took place at the Tsushima Campus in the collaboration building's Room 201.

Continuing from the previous session, this meeting was held in a hybrid format, bringing together a total of 26 participants, which included faculty members, industry representatives, and coordinators. The event commenced with an opening address by Professor Hiromu Moriya, the keynote speaker from the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology's domain of Environmental Life Sciences.

The meeting featured a range of presentations discussing various aspects of microbiological research. Among the topics discussed was Professor Takashi Tamura’s presentation on utilizing supercomputers for microbial research, which highlighted the power of computational tools in advancing our understanding of microorganisms. Following this, Associate Professor Yosuke Senju offered insights into the origins and evolution of eukaryotes through molecular interactions within archaea. Lastly, Professor Takaaki Kubota's presentation focused on unique polyketide compounds produced by dinoflagellates, deepening the audience's knowledge of biological compounds and their implications.

Each presentation was followed by an interactive question-and-answer session, encouraging lively discussions and exchange of ideas. In an open forum that followed, Associate Professors Atsushi Sekimoto and Koichi Takeuchi shared information about the ongoing establishment of a research hub, tentatively named 'AI-HPC Partners', which is aimed at integrating artificial intelligence and high-performance computing into microbiological studies. Engaging in insightful dialogue, participants also deliberated on forging collaborations not only within this initiative but also with the 'Photon Nexus', a project aimed at connecting various disciplines through light.

Following the intellectual discussions, a social gathering was held to encourage networking and strengthen camaraderie among attendees. The upcoming 7th meeting is scheduled for October 27, 2025, at around 5:30 PM, to be hosted at the Co-Creation Innovation Lab (KIBINOVE) 1st floor on the Tsushima Campus. This initiative draws attention to Okayama University's commitment as a core research institution within the region, showcasing its dedication to fostering unique research intersections and collaborative efforts among various scientific fields.

The purpose of the 'Microbial Explorers' initiative is to encourage collaboration among researchers studying microbes, paving the way for new joint research ventures and the establishment of new scientific disciplines. By focusing on the theme of 'microbes,' the group aims to create an accessible and inclusive environment for researchers across diverse fields to participate and exchange ideas freely.
