Southern Nevada's Growth in Bioscience
The Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA) made a significant mark at the recent BIO International Convention, held from June 22 to June 25, 2026, in the vibrant city of San Diego. The event brought together industry leaders and innovators from around the globe, providing a platform for Southern Nevada to demonstrate its burgeoning bioscience ecosystem.
At the Nevada Pavilion, the LVGEA collaborated with key partners such as Roseman Bioventures, the UNLV Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development, and the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development. This collaborative effort showcased the region's strengths in biotechnology, healthcare innovation, research initiatives, and commercialization efforts.
The BIO International Convention stands as the world’s premier biotechnology conference, with over 20,000 attendees and more than 66,000 BIO Partnering™ meetings held throughout the event. The Nevada Pavilion saw considerable engagement, hosting around 75 one-on-one business partnering meetings that linked local organizations with biotechnology companies, investors, and research institutions actively seeking expansion and collaboration opportunities in Southern Nevada.
During the event, LVGEA representatives interacted with over 400 attendees, introducing them to Southern Nevada's vibrant bioscience sector. Attendees were eager to learn about the region’s workforce, research capabilities, and its conducive business environment. The enthusiastic feedback from visitors underlined an important revelation: many were unaware of the extensive bioscience advancements taking place in Las Vegas.
Danielle Casey, President and CEO of LVGEA, expressed her delight, stating, "The overall response throughout the convention was incredibly encouraging. The repeated phrases like 'I had no idea Vegas had all of this' validate just how significant our bioscience ecosystem has grown and the vast opportunity we have to share our narrative. From distinguished research institutions to dynamic startups, we are establishing a competitive biohealth ecosystem on a national scale. The BIO International Convention offered an exceptional platform to highlight this momentum."
The convention was not merely an opportunity to exhibit the successes of the local life sciences sector but also served as a venue to fortify existing relationships while presenting the emerging industry to fresh domestic and international audiences. Participants emphasized the collaborative approach to economic development in Southern Nevada, highlighting the importance of research commercialization and the necessity of cultivating a skilled workforce to attract bioscience enterprises.
Christopher Butte, Deputy Director of Economic and Urban Development for the city of Las Vegas, along with his colleague Missy Braman, articulated the city's appreciation for the engagement and insights gained during the BIO International Convention. They noted that understanding the transformative impact of biotechnology and building strategic partnerships across various segments like research and development, investment, and commercialization is crucial for ensuring that vital therapies reach patients in need.
The BIO 2026 event was a pivotal milestone for Las Vegas, reinforcing the city’s commitment to advancing its biohealth sector. Through the ongoing three-year strategic plan, LVGEA remains steadfast in prioritizing health and life sciences as core industries. Engaging in international events like the BIO International Convention underlines the ongoing efforts to attract high-wage employers, bolster the innovation economy, and diversify Southern Nevada's economic landscape.
