The Tabernacle Choir Celebrates 250th Anniversary of the United States with Special Events Featuring Andy Reid

A Celebration of Unity and Heritage: The Tabernacle Choir's 250th Anniversary Performance

On July 5, 2026, a landmark event will take place at the Temple Square in Salt Lake City as the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra honor the 250th anniversary of the United States with a spectacular program of music and spoken word. This historic celebration will feature the esteemed head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, Andy Reid, as the special guest narrator, offering his reflections on the enduring principles of unity, perseverance, and faith that have shaped American history.

Reid, a three-time Super Bowl champion and one of the most respected coaches in NFL history, shared his sentiments about the event, stating, "I spent over a decade near Independence Hall, where our Founding Fathers penned the Declaration of Independence. They were the ultimate team facing adversity, staying the course, and building something that has lasted for 250 years. I am honored to join the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square to celebrate our nation's birth in a place that embodies the same spirit of unity and faith."

The rich history of the Tabernacle Choir is nearly 180 years strong, having performed in some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and at several U.S. presidential inaugurations. President Ronald Reagan famously referred to the choir as the "Crown Jewel of America." In recognition of their extraordinary contributions to music and choral arts, the Choir was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2003 by President George W. Bush.

Michael O. Leavitt, the president of the choir, expressed the significance of this event, stating, "The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square lends its voice to celebrate the freedom of religion proclaimed to the world in the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago."

The choir's hallmark program, Music and the Spoken Word, has aired weekly since its inception on July 15, 1929. Over the years, it has offered inspiration and hope through music and messages, captivating an audience of over 12 million listeners across more than 50 countries via radio, television, and online streaming platforms.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, Music and the Spoken Word will feature two live performances on Independence Day, with broadcasts set for 9:30 AM MDT and again at 11:00 AM MDT. These performances will be accessible on television, radio, and the choir's YouTube channel.

The live broadcasts from the Salt Lake Tabernacle will continue until 2027, ensuring that audiences both near and far can partake in this momentous occasion. Tickets will be required for anyone wishing to attend the live event on July 5, with further details regarding registration and ticket availability to be announced in the coming months.

This special commemoration not only highlights the musical artistry of the Tabernacle Choir but also serves as a reminder of the values that unite us as a nation. It promises to be a day filled with reflection, celebration, and musical grandeur, marking a significant milestone in American history as the nation looks back on its founding and the principles that guide it forward.
