Introducing Japan Classic Hotel Day: A Tribute to Timeless Hospitality

Japan Classic Hotel Day: A Celebration of Heritage and Hospitality

On September 9, the Japan Classic Hotels Association officially recognized Japan Classic Hotel Day to honor the rich cultural heritage of Japan's classic hotels. Established in 2017, this association unites nine remarkable hotels renowned for their historical significance and exceptional hospitality. By doing so, they aim to preserve and promote the architectural value and service traditions learned over decades.

These nine hotels are more than just places to stay; they are deep-rooted in local history and culture, supporting the communities they inhabit. Travelers are drawn to their grandeur, historic anecdotes, and the beautiful architecture that stands as a testament to Japan's enduring hospitality.

The symbolic date of 9/9 was chosen not only for its phonetic connection to the word classic (ク=9) but also reflects the nine member hotels in the association. This makes the establishment of Japan Classic Hotel Day easy to remember and cherish for guests and stakeholders alike.

In celebration of this new commemorative day, a limited-edition Japan Classic Hotel Day Coaster has been created. This unique coaster will be exclusively used by the nine hotels on September 9, 2025, creating a buzz on social media and exciting discussions among visitors. Each coaster showcases a design featuring the association’s logo — a clock tower symbolizing the nine hotels — accompanied by the names of each hotel beneath it. This antique playing card-inspired design invokes a sense of history while adding a vibrant touch to the occasion.

The Member Hotels

The proud member hotels of the Japan Classic Hotels Association include:
1. Nikko Kanaya Hotel (Established in 1873, Tochigi Prefecture)
2. Fujiya Hotel (Established in 1878, Kanagawa Prefecture)
3. Banpei Hotel (Established in 1894, Nagano Prefecture)
4. Nara Hotel (Established in 1909, Nara Prefecture)
5. Tokyo Station Hotel (Established in 1915, Tokyo Prefecture)
6. Hotel New Grand (Established in 1927, Kanagawa Prefecture)

8. Unzen Kanko Hotel (Established in 1935, Nagasaki Prefecture)
9. Kawana Hotel (Established in 1936, Shizuoka Prefecture)

These hotels were chosen based on strict criteria that ensure they maintain their integrity and continue to operate in line with historical traditions. They must have been founded before World War II, retain their original management philosophy, and preserve their historical buildings. They must also be recognized as cultural properties or industrial heritage sites and be members of the Japan Hotel Association.

A Legacy to Share

The mission of the Japan Classic Hotels Association is to share the value these historic hotels hold, while simultaneously working towards their sustainable management and conservation for future generations. By collaborating on promotional products and public relations activities, the association aims to attract not only nostalgic travelers from older generations but also younger audiences intrigued by authentic experiences and foreign tourists discovering Japan’s rich hotel culture.

With the establishment of Japan Classic Hotel Day and the creation of commemorative coasters, the association reaffirms its commitment to preserving Japan's treasured hospitality history. As this celebration draws nearer, enthusiasts of classic hotels and historical architecture will look forward to this unique opportunity to connect with the stories, traditions, and exceptional service that these hotels represent.
