OLA Energy Expands Its Presence in Africa Through TotalEnergies Marketing Ethiopia Acquisition
OLA Energy's Strategic Acquisition of TotalEnergies Marketing Ethiopia
OLA Energy, one of Africa's leading energy companies, recently announced a significant move to boost its operations across the continent by entering a Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) to acquire TotalEnergies Marketing Ethiopia. This acquisition is poised to enhance OLA Energy's footprint in Ethiopia, which is recognized as one of Africa's fastest-growing economies, housing over 120 million residents.
The Details of the Acquisition
The acquisition encompasses all downstream operations of TotalEnergies in Ethiopia, which includes more than 120 strategically located service stations in key urban areas such as Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, and Mek'ele. This network services a blend of retail, B2B, aviation, and lubricant consumers. Additionally, the deal includes 10 storage assets and a state-of-the-art logistics infrastructure, along with operational digital payment solutions.
Beyond merely selling fuel, the acquisition presents opportunities to leverage various non-fuel services, including convenience stores, car wash stations, and an established aviation fuel distribution service at the Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa.
Rationale and Strategic Importance
Ethiopia represents a market ripe for growth due to its underdeveloped fuel consumption sector, where the per capita consumption stands at a mere 0.4 barrels annually. Therefore, OLA Energy sees this expansion as an opportunity to tap into a burgeoning energy demand that is projected to multiply as the country continues on its upward economic trajectory.
Abozid Swalem, Executive Chairman of OLA Energy, emphasized, "This agreement reflects our confidence in Ethiopia's potential for sustained growth in the energy markets of Africa. It fully aligns with OLA Energy’s ambition to extend our reach, reinforce our network, and maintain close proximity to our clients and the communities we serve across the continent."
Commitment to Transition
As the acquisition nears completion, OLA Energy has prioritized a seamless transition for TotalEnergies Marketing Ethiopia, ensuring stability, quality service standards, and continuity of operations. The local workforce remains a critical element in this strategy, with OLA Energy committed to preserving their expertise during the transition process. All ongoing operations will continue to adhere to applicable laws and obligations until the acquisition is finalized and regulatory approvals are obtained.
In summary, this strategic move not only solidifies OLA Energy’s presence in Ethiopia but also reinforces its overall goal of enhancing energy solutions across its footprint in 17 African nations. As the company continues to grow, the acquisition stands as a testament to its commitment to fostering economic activity and accessibility in the regions it serves.
