Okayama University Showcases Sustainable Campus Initiatives at UN Symposium

On March 13, 2026, the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) hosted a public symposium discussing sustainability efforts from universities participating in the SDG University Partnership Platform (SDG-UP). Okayama University represented the Sustainable Campus Subcommittee of the SDG-UP, showcasing its significant contributions and activities.

The symposium commenced with remarks from Dr. Chiri Zhi Marwala, President of the United Nations University and Assistant Secretary-General of the UN, followed by greetings from Naoko Hirayama, Director of the International Affairs Division at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Sustainable Campus Charter Presentation

The first part of the symposium, titled "Overview of Subcommittee Activities and University Sustainability Initiatives," featured Okayama University's introduction of the draft for the Sustainable Campus Charter. This charter, prepared as a summary of the Sustainable Campus Subcommittee's achievements since the fiscal year 2023, emphasizes essential elements such as "Network Collaboration" through SDG-UP, "Meaningful Youth Engagement & Belonging," and "Transparency & Accountability." The charter aims to be widely utilized by university stakeholders.

Furthermore, Okayama University plans to refine and enhance the charter based on feedback from ongoing subcommittee work and contributions from the university community.

Presentations by Other Universities

The second part of the event included presentations from students of other participating universities, such as Kitakyushu City University, Notre Dame Seishin University, Kwansei Gakuin University, and Nara University of Education, demonstrating the collective commitment towards achieving the SDGs by future generations.

Commitment to the SDGs

Moving forward, Okayama University aims to deepen and expand collaborative initiatives among universities through SDG-UP, strengthening multigenerational solidarity which includes the younger generation. This dedication contributes to promoting Japan's sustainability efforts on a global stage. The university remains committed to being an open, regionally central, and distinctive research institution, and invites community expectations for its sustainable actions.

The Background of SDG-UP

The SDG University Partnership Platform (SDG-UP) was established in 2020 by UNU-IAS as a collaborative platform for universities in Japan that are eager to contribute to achieving the SDGs. Through partnerships among the United Nations University and Japanese universities, SDG-UP enhances initiatives in higher education, fostering stakeholder partnerships essential for sustainable development.

The activities within SDG-UP spur action from stakeholders involved in higher education, working towards a resilient society and a sustainable future for all.

Conclusion

Okayama University's participation in this significant symposium underscores its role in driving sustainability initiatives within higher education. By showcasing its contributions and strategizing for the future, the university is poised to be a leader in research and innovation, championing the imperative of sustainability on both national and global fronts.
