Japan's Participation in the Homeless World Cup Confirmed

The Diversity Soccer Association, a nonprofit organization based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has officially announced that the Japanese team will participate in the upcoming Homeless World Cup in Norway. This announcement comes alongside a report on the successful crowdfunding campaign that made this participation possible, showcasing the incredible community support from around 630 donors.

Crowdfunding Campaign Details

The crowdfunding campaign ran from May 14, 2025, to June 30, 2025, aiming to raise ¥3,500,000. Ultimately, it surpassed the goal, reaching ¥10,381,000 with contributions from 627 supporters. The funds will be used to send the Japanese representative team to the Homeless World Cup in 2025, representing a significant step towards empowering individuals facing social challenges.

A Word from the Executive Director

Naofumi Suzuki, the executive director of the Diversity Soccer Association, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support received during the crowdfunding campaign. He noted that this was the organization's first crowdfunding effort since becoming a legal entity, with challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, which hindered their ability to gather in large numbers.

After years of connecting activities through virtual means, the association regained momentum by successfully hosting the Diversity Soccer Festival in March 2024, which attracted nearly 200 participants. Now, after a 13-year hiatus, they are delighted to represent Japan at the Homeless World Cup.

Commitment to Continuous Empowerment

Moving forward, the organization aims to sustain Japan's participation in the Homeless World Cup while simultaneously nurturing the domestic community of diversity soccer. The next five years are seen as crucial in expanding these efforts. Until now, the association operated with minimal public exposure, but they acknowledge the necessity of broadening their outreach to maintain both domestic activities and international participation.

The successful crowdfunding campaign has inspired a sense of responsibility, especially with over ¥10 million entrusted to them by the community. The additional funds secured will enhance the experience of the team during their trip to the Homeless World Cup in Oslo in August, and a dedicated communications team will share updates in real-time, inviting supporters to engage and cheer for the team.

Future Endeavors and Goals

The latter part of the funds raised will be carefully allocated to ensure the sustainability of future activities, focusing on maintaining a new monthly gathering space for participants while addressing individual needs. While immediate challenges like transportation costs may not have quick solutions, the association aims to create a prototype for ride-share services and buddy systems to improve accessibility for all.

Workshops leveraging the knowledge gained from creating inclusive sports environments will be gradually expanded, aiming to engage more community members and stakeholders over time.

Press Conference Invitation

A press conference discussing Japan's participation in the Homeless World Cup will be held on August 9, 2025, at 6:30 PM. The venue will be BumB Tokyo Sports Culture Hall, Room C, located in Koto, Tokyo. All interested media personnel are warmly invited to attend. The panel will feature players from the Japanese team, the head coach, and Naofumi Suzuki.
