Experience Traditional Japanese Paper Making at the Field Trip Plus Program in May 2026

Discover the Art of Japanese Washi at Field Trip Plus

On May 17, 2026, the Global Learner’s Institute (GLI) will host the Field Trip Plus program, providing an interactive learning experience centered around the traditional Japanese craft of Washi paper. The event will take place in Taito, Tokyo, at the Washi Lab Tokyo, where participants will engage in hands-on activities and explorative learning about Washi.

Why Focus on Washi?

This program aims to foster not only creativity but also a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and language. By creating Washi, students will:
  • - Learn the joys of using English while learning
  • - Develop an appreciation for Japanese traditions
  • - Cultivate curiosity about materials and history

During the workshop, participants will delve into the origins of Washi paper, which is made from Kozo (mulberry trees), and explore its manufacturing process along with its cultural significance. The experience will seamlessly blend local material use, creating Washi that reflects the essence of Tokyo.

A Structured Learning Experience: Three Steps

The learning journey at GLI is designed to be comprehensive, consisting of three engaging stages:
1. Learn:
- Understand what Washi is
- Discover how it is produced
- Explore its role in Japanese culture
2. Make:
Participants will create their own Washi postcards at the Washi Lab Tokyo. After making their cards, they’ll write messages and send them, creating a unique experience of receiving their handcrafted items.
3. Present:
Students will summarize their learnings and creations in an English presentation, turning their experiential learning into verbal understanding.

Support for All Students

Parents worried about their children's English skills can rest assured as GLI staff will be present to assist with understanding and sharing insights throughout the program.
