MSCI Launches Innovative Index Bridging Public and Private Markets

MSCI's Game-Changing Index Combines Public and Private Equity

On December 5, 2025, MSCI Inc., a leading name in the investment management sector, announced the launch of its innovative index, the MSCI All Country Public + Private Equity Index. This unprecedented index is designed to integrate insights from public and private markets into a cohesive framework, offering crucial tools for investors tracking their global equity exposure on a daily basis.

With the surge in private market investments, private equity has evolved into a cornerstone asset class due to its potential for diversification, long-term returns, and exposure to economic sectors not fully captured by public markets. The newly introduced index reflects this shift in investment dynamics by setting a standard that accurately captures the performance of global stock price movements across both market segments.

The MSCI All Country Public + Private Equity Index draws on the performance data of publicly listed equities from its flagship index, the MSCI ACWI IMI, which currently benchmarks around $5.6 trillion in assets under management. Furthermore, it utilizes cash flow and valuation insights gathered from nearly 10,000 private equity funds via limited partners (LPs), calculated daily to produce a state-of-the-art measure of market trends.

By adopting this integrative approach, MSCI has melded the investment universe of public equities with modeled exposures to private equity within a unified global equity framework. This comprehensive index construction adheres to MSCI's design principles, clearly delineating the rules for index building, maintenance, and rebalancing to ensure consistent application and reliability.

The stated allocation target for private equity sits at 15%, with daily performance metrics aligned with the weighted distributions post-drift. To maintain the integrity of this target allocation, the index will undergo quarterly reviews and rebalancing, reflecting the most up-to-date index composition data available. Each review will reset the weights according to the target allocation objective, ensuring continuity and comparability over time, per MSCI’s established index maintenance policy.

Luke Flemer, Head of MSCI's Private Assets division, shared, “This index represents a significant milestone in enhancing transparency and accessibility in the private market segment. By consolidating our high-quality data, global research capabilities, and index provision strengths, we are expanding the toolkit available to investors looking to simplify access, benchmarking, and asset allocation in private capital.”

The unveiling of this index reflects MSCI's commitment to empowering investors with the tools, research, and data necessary to make informed portfolio decisions. For further details on this initiative, visitors can explore MSCI Private Assets.
