Aker BioMarine's Innovative Renewable Energy Agreement with ENGIE Enhances Sustainability Efforts
Aker BioMarine Partners with ENGIE for 24/7 Renewable Energy Supply
Aker BioMarine, a pioneer in the biotechnology industry, has solidified its commitment to sustainability through a groundbreaking 24/7 renewable energy agreement with ENGIE. This strategic collaboration is designed to support Aker BioMarine's long-term operational sustainability goals and aligns with the company’s ethos of responsible energy sourcing.
In an industry where sustainability is becoming increasingly important, Aker BioMarine has taken the lead by adopting site-specific Renewable Energy Certificates. These certificates uniquely link each unit of electricity consumed to renewable energy projects, allowing the company to match approximately 90% of its electricity consumption with local renewable generation on an hourly basis. This level of precision not only showcases the company’s commitment to sustainable practices but sets a new benchmark in the quest for operational sustainability.
Under this agreement, ENGIE provides Aker BioMarine with 100% renewable energy, aligning with its aim to deliver practical and scalable energy solutions to clients. This innovative approach transcends traditional renewable energy procurement by supplying clean energy that matches consumption on an hourly basis. The renewable energy supply will primarily be anchored by the Impact Solar Project located in Lamar County, Texas, along with other designated renewable assets.
Taymur Bunkheila, Regional VP and Retail Supply Lead for ENGIE's U.S. 24/7 product, highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, "Working with companies that have embedded sustainability into their core strategy is vital for achieving measurable progress in the energy sector. We are dedicated to helping organizations improve their transparency and accountability through this partnership."
Aker BioMarine's long-standing focus on sustainability is further underscored by the launch of this new agreement, which adds to a series of initiatives aimed at minimizing environmental impact across its operations and value chain. For instance, the company's Houston facility has achieved a remarkable 100% recycling rate for large production bags. Looking ahead to 2026, Aker BioMarine has plans to enhance its recycling efficiency even further.
Moreover, Aker BioMarine is committed to biodiversity and marine conservation, as evidenced by its collaboration with the Sustainable Markets Initiative founded by King Charles III. According to Matts Johansen, CEO of Aker BioMarine, the agreement with ENGIE represents a significant step forward in reducing Scope 2 emissions and aligns with the company’s overarching sustainability strategy. "ENGIE has provided us with an affordable and innovative solution that effectively connects our electricity consumption with renewable power generation, thereby strengthening our climate reporting and reducing our environmental footprint while maintaining the high-quality products we provide to our customers," Johansen remarked.
The significance of this renewable energy agreement transcends mere compliance; it integrates energy accountability into the daily operations of Aker BioMarine. The company adopts a holistic, value-chain-focused approach to emission reduction, seeking to lower emissions across all scopes and operations as it strives towards its 2030 carbon intensity reduction goals.
Priority Power played an integral role in advising and guiding the agreement, ensuring it met Aker BioMarine’s sustainability priorities while integrating ENGIE's suite of energy solutions seamlessly into the company's operational framework. This collaboration emphasizes the delivery of measurable value that aligns with Aker BioMarine’s sustainability commitments.
