Collaboration Between Akemi-chan Foundation and Bear School Promotes Hope for Children with Heart Disease

Special Program at Tokyo University Hospital

In a heartwarming collaboration, the Akemi-chan Foundation, based in Osaka and led by Director Hideyuki Sekine, has joined forces with the beloved picture book series "Bear School" to create a unique program aimed at supporting children suffering from congenital heart diseases and other long-term medical challenges. This special event, titled "Bear School Mobile Classes," is set to take place at the Tokyo University Medical School Hospital in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, in November 2025.

"Bear School" has captured the hearts of many with its charming tales of 12 little bears, showcasing their earnestness and warmth. The upcoming event seeks to recreate this gentle world within the hospital environment, providing a special experience for children battling serious illnesses. Many of these youngsters face long-term hospitalization, often unable to attend preschool, kindergarten, or school. This lack of social interaction can significantly impact their emotional and psychological development, making such initiatives vital.

During the event, children will have the chance to interact with the main character, Jackie, who will visit the hospital. Programs will include interactive learning sessions, sing-alongs, dance, and opportunities for commemorative photographs. This experience will not just facilitate character interaction; it will allow children to temporarily escape their daily hospital routines and engage in an educational setting, reigniting their zest for learning and joy in socializing with peers.

Furthermore, the program aims to foster curiosity and bring smiles to the children's faces, encouraging a strong desire for learning and connection with their community. It will also spotlight the resilience of these children and the warm bonds they share with their families, communicating their struggles to a broader audience and helping to cultivate a circle of support.

The Akemi-chan Foundation has been providing crucial support to children suffering from congenital heart diseases and other critical conditions for over half a century. More than 500 young lives have been saved thanks to their relentless efforts. In the 2022 fiscal year, they donated pediatric artificial hearts to four hospitals and continued this mission into 2023 with contributions to two additional facilities. The foundation remains committed to creating a brighter future for children in need.

After its inaugural event in Tokyo, the “Bear School Mobile Classes” program is set to expand to 12 related transplant facilities across the country, spreading joy and hope further afield.
