Expanding Childcare Support for Military Families Through ASYMCA and Navy Federal Partnership

Enhanced Childcare for Military Families

The collaboration between the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) and Navy Federal Credit Union has taken a significant step forward as they expand their national military family childcare partnership. This partnership, now entering its second year, aims to bolster support in communities that face the greatest challenges regarding access to affordable childcare for military families. As military families navigate life, the realities of balancing work and family can be especially daunting without robust childcare options.

Since its inception in 2025, this partnership emerged to tackle the pressing issues military families encounter while seeking quality childcare. The demand for childcare has consistently outnumbered availability across the United States, and costs are soaring. For junior enlisted families, the gap between required childcare support and available options continues to widen, highlighting the need for immediate action.

Focus on Accessibility and Affordability

The expanded partnership seeks to not only increase program capacity but also improve affordability and access to childcare services that align with the unique lifestyles of military families. This encompasses providing childcare during evenings, weekends, and summer periods when traditional childcare options may be scarce.

William French, Vice Admiral (Ret.) and President of ASYMCA, remarked on the success of the partnership, stating, "The partnership with NFCU has been incredible for our childcare offerings in various locations. The results we saw from year one essentially tells us that while successful, there is a lot more to be done. And that is what this phase is, expansion - more space, more access, more families served."

In its first operational year, the partnership has yielded measurable benefits for military populations in five key markets where there is a significant need for childcare support. This has included the expansion of physical space, among other initiatives. For instance, in Killeen, Texas, resources have allowed 342 additional children per day to tap into programming. Similarly, in San Diego, California, 956 participants gained access through afterschool and camp programs, alongside early learning initiatives. Fort Bragg, North Carolina, has also seen a remarkable increase in camp registrants and slots for extended school day care.

The expansion initiatives aren’t restricted to these states. In locations like Hawaii and Hampton Roads, investments have enabled broader access to preschool and summer camp facilities, creating vital support for families that previously had limited or no options.

Dietrich Kuhlmann, CEO of Navy Federal, expressed the organization's commitment to assisting military families, stating: "We know access to childcare is a significant need across this country. Like all parents, military families deserve high-quality, affordable childcare options while they work to keep our nation safe. We are tremendously grateful for ASYMCA's partnership, and we look forward to expanding our support for military families where it's needed most."

Commitment to Ongoing Support

The second year of this partnership will focus on building upon this momentum and further extending childcare options in high-need areas. Plans for expanded programming include increased physical capacity in Killeen and scholarship models in San Diego that facilitate wider access for families needing financial assistance.

This ongoing collaboration showcases a united effort from both organizations to enhance childcare accessibility and contribute positively to the well-being of military families across the nation. By addressing the urgent needs for childcare, ASYMCA and Navy Federal are setting an example of how community-driven programs can make a significant impact on those who serve our country.
