Dunn Center's Double Art Exhibit Promises a Unique Cultural Experience

Art Extravaganza at the Dunn Center

The Dunn Center, situated at North Carolina Wesleyan University, is poised to unveil a remarkable art event inspired by the charm of classic Hollywood double features. On June 28, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, local art enthusiasts are invited to a free public reception that will showcase two distinct art exhibitions.

A Celebration of Creativity

The event features "Beyond the Wall" in the Mims Gallery, an exhibition that showcases the inspiring works of artists involved in the Nash Correctional Institution Art Club. This program, unique in North Carolina, aims to provide offenders with an opportunity to express their creativity through art. From June 5 to July 30, attendees can view and bid on the 43 original pieces displayed in the gallery. All proceeds from the silent auction will go directly to the Your Choice Resource Center in Rocky Mount, furthering community support.

Markell Mitchell, the Art Club Coordinator, emphasizes the transformative power of art in such programs. The structured classes offer offenders a creative outlet while contributing to local charities through the sale of their artworks. The pairing of creativity and social good aims to reshape perceptions and encourage dialogue around art and rehabilitation.

Diverse Artistic Expressions

In addition to the Mims Gallery's fascinating installation, the Janice Gravely Gallery will spotlight the Tar River Art Gallery Summer Show, featuring an impressive collection of 150 new artworks. This exhibition welcomes a diverse array of local artists, allowing visitors to explore an eclectic mix of creative disciplines including oil and watercolor paintings, photography, sculptures, and innovative installations made from wood and metal.

This summer showcase represents the immense tapestry of artistic talent in the region, inviting visitors to celebrate the vibrant energy of Eastern North Carolina's art scene. The gallery will be open throughout the summer, accommodating art lovers with extended hours from Monday to Thursday and special Friday sessions.

Free Admission and Accessibility

The double feature reception represents a wonderful summer outing for families, art enthusiasts, and community members. With free admission to both exhibitions and easy access to parking adjacent to the Dunn Center, the event is designed to be inclusive and enjoyable for all.

In addition to the visual feast, attendees can enjoy light refreshments and live music from acclaimed local cellist Jeff Hatley, adding a delightful soundtrack to the art-filled afternoon.

With events like this, the Dunn Center not only promotes the arts but also builds community connections and fosters creative expressions that resonate far beyond the gallery walls. Don’t miss the chance to witness the creativity of local artists and support meaningful community initiatives at this exceptional art event!
