Celebrate Japanese Sweets: 14th Wagashi Enichi Event with UNHCR Support

The 14th Wagashi Enichi: A Sweet Celebration

DM Mitsui Sugar, a renowned sugar manufacturer based in Minato, Tokyo, is excited to announce its 14th Wagashi Enichi on April 17, 2025. This event has been a beloved gathering for sweet lovers and is held in the front yard of the DM Mitsui Sugar headquarters. The collaboration with the historic confectionery company, Eitaro Sohonpo, and Takashimaya's wagashi buyer, Tsukasa Hatta, highlights the significance of this cultural event.

The theme of this year's Wagashi Enichi is "Supporting traditional sweets from around the country and contributing to local communities." The Japanese wagashi industry is facing several challenges, including an aging workforce and a lack of successors. The impact of COVID-19 has also led to a decrease in demand, putting additional pressure on this cherished industry.

In response, DM Mitsui Sugar has been actively looking for ways to support the wagashi business, deeply connected to their main product—sugar. After recognizing the industry’s struggles, they decided to initiate the Wagashi Enichi, which has been successfully running since February 2024.

This year's event aims for greater sustainability and longevity, transitioning from a monthly event to seasonal gatherings. Attendees are invited to indulge in the vibrant flavors and artistry of spring's wagashi offerings, making this a must-visit celebration.

Meet Tsukasa Hatta

Tsukasa Hatta, a buyer for Takashimaya's MD Headquarters, is passionate about wagashi. Born on Valentine's Day in 1980, he graduated from Waseda University's Faculty of Commerce. Surprisingly, he abstained from sweets until he entered the workforce. In 2003, Hatta joined Takashimaya, starting in the Western confectionery section before transitioning to wagashi. Over the years, he has visited over 1,000 wagashi shops across Japan and has tasted more than 10,000 varieties, making wagashi a daily delight in his life.
