Politecnico di Milano Launches Brussels Liaison Office

The Politecnico di Milano has recently inaugurated its Brussels Liaison Office, aimed at enhancing communication with European Union institutions and facilitating the university's involvement in EU research and innovation programs. With the planned conclusion of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), the next EU Framework Programme is poised to become the primary vehicle for research funding, influencing the international prestige of universities across Europe. In this evolving landscape, the Politecnico di Milano's new office is strategically positioned to anticipate shifts in European research and innovation policy while leveraging its established presence in EU funding programs.

The Politecnico di Milano stands out as Italy's foremost university in securing financial support through Horizon Europe, having successfully acquired funding for 389 projects valued at around €185.68 million. Furthermore, under the 2021-2027 Framework Programme, the university has also won 44 European Research Council (ERC) grants totaling €44.65 million, reinforcing its position in trailblazing research initiatives.

The rector of the university, Donatella Sciuto, elaborated on the strategic rationale behind establishing the Brussels office, stating, "Europe is at a defining crossroads from various perspectives, particularly advanced research and competitiveness. Our inquiry was not about our benefits from this space but rather what constructive contributions we can offer to policymakers." This philosophy underpins the university's approach as it seeks to strengthen ties with EU institutions and actively partake in shaping continental research priorities.

Serving as a vital communication bridge, the Brussels Liaison Office will maintain ongoing dialogue with key EU stakeholders and assist in defining strategic agendas within the realms of research and innovation. It aims to empower Politecnico researchers by providing structured support while navigating EU program participation, especially in consideration of upcoming planning periods.
