Experience Keith Haring's Street Performances Through an Exciting Photo Exhibition and Pop-Up Shop in Shimokitazawa

Celebrating Keith Haring's Art in Shimokitazawa

The Nakamura Keith Haring Museum, located in Kobuchizawa, Yamanashi Prefecture, will present a captivating photo exhibition and pop-up shop at Brooklyn Roasting Company in Shimokitazawa from February 10 to February 23, 2026. This event pays homage to the late artist Keith Haring, with a focus on his belief that "art is for everyone."

In 1988, Haring visited Japan and performed on the streets of Omotesando, engaging with passersby. This exhibition will feature 23 photographs documenting the artist's vibrant street performances, all captured by photographer Akira Kishida. Various moments will be displayed, revealing not only Haring’s energetic chalk drawings but also the reactions of the audience surrounding him. The photographs encapsulate the creative process and the atmosphere of those spontaneous moments from decades ago.

Moreover, the exhibition will provide insights from Akira Kishida and his brother, Riki Kishida, who were pivotal in documenting these events as they accompanied the artist during his time in Tokyo. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to view the discussions and stories shared by the Kishida brothers through panels presented at the event.

Keith Haring’s Legacy and Pop-Up Shop

In conjunction with the photo exhibition, there will be a limited-time pop-up shop, echoing Haring's own initiative. In 1986, he opened the "Pop Shop," where he sold merchandise not merely as items for sale but as an extension of his artistic message—promoting accessibility to art. This philosophy aimed at making his work available and enjoyable for everyone, from young children to adults, rather than restricting it to an affluent few.

At the pop-up shop, attendees will discover various products inspired by Haring's art, which continue to be created globally even after his passing. This shop will serve as an avenue for attendees to connect with Haring’s ideals and explore how his art transcends generations.
