LONGi's Innovations Against Desertification Highlighted at COP16 in Saudi Arabia

LONGi's Sustainable Innovations at COP16

On December 2nd, 2024, the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) commenced in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This event is particularly significant as the host nation faces the real challenges of desertification, land degradation, and enduring drought conditions.

During the conference, LONGi Green Energy, a global leader in solar technology, was invited to speak at two key side events aimed at fostering a dialogue around environmental sustainability. Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer Zhang Haimeng delivered a compelling video presentation outlining LONGi's innovative strategies and notable successes in combatting desertification.

LONGi emphasizes sustainable development as a central pillar of its business model, actively promoting the intersection of renewable energy and ecological preservation. Zhang highlighted the staggering statistics: global desertification affects 45% of the earth's surface, impacting approximately 3.2 billion people—about one-third of the world's population. Remarkably, utilizing merely 1% of the world's desert lands for photovoltaic power generation could satisfy the electricity demands of every individual on the planet. Furthermore, if 70% of these desert areas transitioned into sustainable oases, they could effectively absorb all carbon emissions produced by human activities.

The company has utilized photovoltaic technology as a critical method for desertification control, showcasing its potential for ecological restoration. In the Kubuqi Desert, LONGi has successfully established two photovoltaic power stations totaling over 670 kW, fostering environmental development models that combine energy generation with biodiversity. According to Zhang, this approach includes
