Okayama University Students Showcase Innovative Collaboration at Annual Conference Side Event

On July 15, 2025, Okayama University held a side event during the annual meeting of the Okayama University Research Cooperation Association at the Tsushima Campus. This event aimed to highlight the outstanding multicultural collaborative activities currently being pursued by the university's students. The meeting was attended by around 70 representatives from approximately 85 economic organizations and companies across Okayama Prefecture, fostering deeper connections between academia and industry.

The event featured presentations from various student-led initiatives, beginning with Shiona Okada, the chair of the student group "The World Kitchen," which is part of the Global Discovery Program (GDP). Shiona shared insights into their multicultural exchange events coordinated with local residents and international students, emphasizing the importance of creating a community foundation that respects diversity and promotes coexistence with foreigners. Shiona's presentation showcased how their activities not only engage students but also benefit the local community by bridging cultural gaps.

Next, Yuya Shimizu, representing MOSAdemy and currently in the second year of his Ph.D. program in Environmental Science, presented on the advancements made in the development of the four-legged robot "Unitree Go2" and the integration of robotics education. His work illustrates the innovative potential that merges technology with education and underscores the importance of hands-on learning experiences.

Following this, Ken Hasegawa, an alumnus and representative of CraftZone, elaborated on his student media venture, "OTD," initiated during his time at Okayama University. He highlighted the achievements of the "Research Cooperation Association TV," which produces video content focusing on the local companies in Okayama. Ken emphasized how social media can be leveraged to enhance brand awareness and support recruitment in a digital age.

The event's climax featured a special keynote speech by Takahiro Hamamoto, CEO of TIMEWELL and a special associate professor at Shinshu University. He passionately discussed the "Japan Reconstruction Strategy in the Age of AI," advocating for the cultivation of technical entrepreneurs and global talent while exploiting new opportunities created by AI’s integration with local industries.

As the event reached its conclusion, Takao Funakura, Vice Director of the Research and Innovation Co-Creation Office at Okayama University, presented an exciting future vision where the Okayama University Research Cooperation Association aims to evolve into a general incorporated association. This proposal garnered significant support and enthusiasm among participants, signaling a shared commitment to fostering innovation and cooperation in the region.

Prior to the side event, the Okayama University Research Cooperation Association convened for its annual board meeting, where new executives were elected, financial reports were reviewed, and plans for the coming year were approved. This reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening collaboration with local industries.

After the side event, a networking gathering took place at the Co-Creation Innovation Lab "KIBINOVE," allowing students and industry representatives to engage in lively discussions, further solidifying the relationships cultivated during the event.
