Adam Stewart Recognized for Transformative Impact on Caribbean Tourism and Community Development
Adam Stewart Honored with American Friends of Jamaica's 2026 International Achievement Award
In a remarkable event held at The Plaza Hotel in New York City, Adam Stewart, the Executive Chairman of Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts, was awarded the 2026 International Achievement Award by the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ). This honor recognizes his extensive contributions and transformative impact on Jamaica and the Caribbean. The award was presented during the AFJ’s annual Hummingbird Gala on October 16, where notable figures gathered to celebrate contributions to humanitarian causes and Caribbean development. Emmy Award-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph was also honored that evening with the AFJ International Humanitarian Award, spotlighting individuals dedicated to making a difference.
The Hummingbird Gala not only celebrated individual achievements but also served as a vital fundraising event supporting AFJ's initiatives aimed at enhancing education, healthcare, and economic development throughout Jamaica. This year's gala carries additional significance as it aligns closely with the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Melissa, a devastating event that impacted many communities in Jamaica. The recognition of Stewart, therefore, not only highlights his contributions but also underscores his commitment to the region’s recovery and future growth.
Stewart's acceptance speech resonated with heartfelt gratitude and pride in his heritage. Reflecting on the foundation laid by his late father who started the hotel company in 1981 with just 99 rooms in Montego Bay, Stewart articulated the dream that has evolved into a world-recognized brand today. He expressed, “What began as a simple dream has grown into a globally recognized brand... we'll keep showing up every day and doing everything we can for this extraordinary island. We will never stop.” This sentiment eloquently encapsulates the mission and ongoing dedication that Stewart embodies within the Caribbean tourism industry.
A significant part of Stewart's legacy includes a US$200 million revitalization initiative focusing on three of Sandals’ iconic Jamaican resorts, which were temporarily closed after Hurricane Melissa. The renovations aim to enhance guest experiences, with upgrades like new accommodations, expanded dining choices, and redesigned amenities. The reopening dates of the revamped resorts are scheduled for November and December 2026, building a sense of optimism and recovery for Jamaica's tourism sector and the local economy.
Moreover, demonstrating a commendable commitment to his employees, Stewart ensured that 100% of the Jamaican team members remained on payroll throughout the recovery phase, offering job security and benefits even while the inn faced challenges. A total of more than US$5 million was allocated to provide direct recovery support, highlighting Stewart's prioritization of his team’s welfare during and after the devastation of the storm.
Stewart's philanthropic spirit shines through various initiatives conducted under the Sandals Foundation, which he leads. The foundation has consistently provided immense support for education, community building, and environmental conservation across Jamaica and the Caribbean. In 2012, he launched the Sandals Corporate University, designed to enhance access to professional development for Caribbean workers, encouraging lifelong learning and career progression.
As Jamaica looks towards a brighter future in tourism, under Stewart's visionary leadership, there is a strong focus on inclusivity, empowerment, and community-centric growth. His recognition through the AFJ’s International Achievement Award is a testament to the enduring commitment to excellence within the travel and tourism industry and serves as an inspiration to current and future leaders striving for similar pathways of impact.
With such strong initiatives and heartfelt dedication, Adam Stewart's ongoing journey in empowering communities and promoting the Caribbean’s vibrant tourism landscape continues to be marked by resilience and transformative leadership. As the islands and their people navigate their way to recovery, Stewart remains a shining beacon of hope and progress in the realm of Caribbean hospitality.
