Experience the Charm of Yamagata Wines at the Upcoming Yamagata Vandage Event 2026 in Tokyo

Discover Yamagata Vandage 2026

The popular wine event "Yamagata Vandage" is making its return to Tokyo! Scheduled for March 20, 2026, this exciting event will showcase a variety of wines from Yamagata Prefecture, allowing attendees the chance to enjoy 19 distinctive selections all in one place. The event, which takes place in Koenji, will start ticket reservations on January 20, and given the previous year's sold-out tickets, anticipation is high for this year’s festivities.

The theme for this edition is "Reborn," symbolizing renewal. The key visual for the event will depict the rejuvenation of Mount Zao, accompanied by the auspicious clouds known as "zuikyun" which signify good fortune. The event promises to epitomize the vibrant essence of Yamagata wines, which are known for their exceptional quality and unique characteristics.

About the Yamagata Wine Industry

Organized by the Yamagata Prefectural Winery Association, which comprises 23 local wineries, the Yamagata Vandage event aims to promote the appeal of wines produced in Yamagata Prefecture. The term "Vandage" itself is derived from the French word for wine, "vin," combined with the Yamagata dialect "dajé," reflecting a friendly approach to Yamagata’s winemaking culture.

In recent years, Yamagata wines have gained recognition for their crisp acidity, thanks to the excellent cultivation techniques and cool, temperature-differential climate of the region. The wineries create wines that not only highlight local characteristics but also innovate in their production methods. As a result, attendees can expect an even more diverse and captivating selection this year.

A Walkable Wine-Tasting Experience

The festival will feature a walkaround format where participants can explore eight restaurants in Koenji, each chosen for their ability to pair well with Yamagata wines. In collaboration with 19 wineries, the event emphasizes the harmonious relationship between local wines and cuisine. The lineup includes dishes crafted to compliment the unique flavors of the wines, ensuring an unforgettable tasting experience. Furthermore, attendees will have the opportunity to engage directly with the winemakers, making for a richer connection to the wines being served.

This year's event has expanded to include two new restaurants, bringing the total to eight. Guests will be treated to a variety of light meals—one from each dining establishment, along with a selection of 19 different wines to sample.

The Significance of Yamagata Wines

Those who revel in wine will appreciate that Yamagata wines, which enjoy Japan's highest number of geographical indications (GI) certifications, have a registered count exceeding 400. This unique acknowledgment reflects the distinctive qualities of Yamagata’s wine production. Additionally, the Yamagata wineries have been recognized nationally, showcasing the region's commitment to excellence in winemaking.

As the chairperson of the Yamagata Prefectural Winery Association, Ippei Sakai, remarks, the upcoming Yamagata Vandage is a significant step for the region's wine community. Originally initiated in 2013 as an educational project for young winemakers, the event aims to elevate the awareness of Yamagata wines, and it has now become a staple in the Tokyo wine scene following its revival after the pandemic.

The Yamagata Vandage 2026 is structured into two sessions to accommodate more guests. With individual capacity limits in place, eager wine lovers should plan ahead to secure their tickets and ensure a delightful experience.
