Kurokawa Kaban, established in 1895, is dedicated to supporting the healthy growth of children through various workshops designed to immerse them in authentic experiences. This summer, Kurokawa Kaban will kick off its workshops with a special leather session on July 20, focused on the nuances of leather, commonly associated with their renowned randoseru (Japanese backpack). Participants will learn from President Miyauchi of Miyauchi Industries, who will share insights about leather and give attendees the opportunity to touch real leather themselves.
The workshop will cover:
1. The process of leather production - from raw material to finished product.
2. Hands-on experience with different types of leather—horses, cows, and deer.
3. Understanding the textural differences among various leather finishes, including pebbled and smooth.
4. Creative activity where participants will craft items using their favorite types of leather.
Kurokawa Kaban's workshops reflect their commitment to providing valuable experiences that not only educate but also inspire creativity in young minds. The initiative began with a vision to enhance the wellbeing of children through hands-on experiences with genuine materials. Last year's workshops saw an overwhelming response, paving the way for an even more comprehensive series this year.
Upcoming workshops include:
- - July 20: Leather Workshop at Ginza
- - August 9: Family Business Experience at Ginza
- - August 10: Photography with a Professional in Toyama
- - August 20: Puzzle Workshop at Ginza
- - September (date TBD): Beekeeping Experience at Ginza
On July 20, workshops will be held at the Ginza Paper Pulp Hall, Room 4. Due to high demand, spots will be allocated via lottery.
Application Period: July 5 to July 12, 2025

The Craft of Kurokawa Kaban's Randoseru
Kurokawa Kaban's randoseru are crafted from natural leather, sourced from meat-processing cows and horses, emphasizing sustainability. Leather has captured attention as an eco-friendly material, as it is not only durable but also woven into the fabric of human history. Each piece of natural leather has unique characteristics, making every bag distinct.
At Kurokawa Kaban, skilled artisans meticulously sew each randoseru, utilizing high-quality natural materials to enhance their distinct properties. To ensure that the randoseru supports children's development, Kurokawa Kaban has developed their 'Habataku®' randoseru, a design focused on minimizing physical strain on children's bodies. The company remains dedicated to producing reliable companions for children throughout their elementary school years.
