The Highly Anticipated Re-Stage of Tsuka Kohei's Masterpiece "Kakeochi" in Ueno in November 2026

The Return of a Classic

In an exciting development for theatre lovers, the acclaimed drama "Kakeochi", crafted by Tsuka Kohei, is set for a much-anticipated revival. Organized by 9PROJECT, this performance will span four days from November 5th to 8th, 2026, at the Ueno Storehouse in Tokyo, Japan.

9PROJECT has a reputation for staging early works of Tsuka Kohei from the 1970s and 1980s, and this upcoming show marks their 25th performance. The production will adapt "Kakeochi '83", a piece that originally aired on NHK's Ginga Television Novel, showcasing the complexities of human emotions and relationships.

A Dramatic Tale of Love and Choices

The story centers around Yasuo, a young man struggling to step into adulthood, who is living off his fiancée Setsuko. As he idles away his days, the Hojo family, known for its matriarchal lineage, prepares for Yasuo and Setsuko's upcoming wedding. However, when an unexpected marriage proposal from a wealthy businessman arrives, Setsuko finds herself torn. Despite her feelings for Yasuo, she contemplates eloping with him instead of facing a life bound to societal expectations.

As her excitement grows, she tells Yasuo, "Let’s elope! Take me away to somewhere else!" With this declaration, their romantic escapade to Kyoto, the city of love, begins. This journey illustrates not just their personal struggle but also the colorful spectrum of human existence, merging comedy with poignant moments that resonate deeply.

A Nostalgic Revival

9PROJECT previously presented this work in their third production back in 2016 and received notable acclaim for its heartfelt narrative and captivating dialogue. Now, a decade later, the team aims to refine the original, providing a fresh perspective that mirrors contemporary experiences while paying homage to its emotional roots.

This performance promises to be a celebration of life, connecting with audiences who see reflections of their own struggles and triumphs in everyday battles. Filled with Tsuka Kohei’s signature wit and pathos, it is described as an anthem for “ordinary people” living life to the fullest.
