atNorth's Heat Reuse Partnership with Kesko: A Model for Sustainability

In a groundbreaking initiative, atNorth has launched a partnership with Kesko Corporation, aimed at transforming how energy is utilized in the retail sector. Initiated in November 2025, this collaboration allows excess heat from atNorth's FIN02 data center in Espoo, Finland, to be repurposed for heating a nearby Kesko retail location. This innovative project not only showcases effective resource reuse but also exemplifies the principles of the circular economy at work.

By redirecting waste heat generated by the data center infrastructure, this partnership is set to meet nearly all heating demands for the adjacent Kesko store. This shift means a notable decrease in reliance on traditional district heating sources, which is expected to lessen overall emissions significantly for both companies involved. Kesko's sustainability goals include a staggering target of a 58.8% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, which primarily stem from energy consumption related to heating.

According to Antti Kokkonen, Director of Energy at Kesko, “Reducing emissions from the heating of our properties is a key priority within our sustainability strategy. Through this collaboration with atNorth, we are able to significantly cut emissions at one of our stores while demonstrating how innovative partnerships can accelerate the transition to lower-carbon operations.”

The environmental impact of this initiative will be quite significant, with projections indicating a reduction of approximately 200 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year from Kesko's emissions, accounting for around 0.9% of the company's emissions from district heating. By using recycled waste heat, atNorth and Kesko are leading by example in their industries, demonstrating that ambitious sustainability goals are achievable through thoughtful, cooperative endeavors.
