Second Lab, a leading educational company based in Shibuya, Tokyo, has just unveiled a new feature in their educational version of Minecraft called the "Minecraft AI Course." Set to officially launch on August 30, 2026, this innovative course brings a fresh approach to programming education by allowing students to dictate instructions in Japanese, which the AI then translates into MakeCode programming that can be executed within Minecraft's world.

Background of the New Feature

In today’s software development landscape, it’s become commonplace to delegate code writing to AI. However, traditional programming education for children has continued to focus heavily on the act of writing code itself. With AI now capable of generating code, the skills that learners must develop are evolving beyond just writing. Recognizing this shift, Second Lab has designed the Minecraft AI Course to address the need for students to cultivate new skills in articulating their ideas, adjusting commands based on AI outputs, and making decisions on whether to code manually or let AI take over.

Unique Features of the Course

Unlike typical AI development which prioritizes output accuracy, this course focuses on maximizing student learning. Here are two key adjustments made for improved educational outcomes:

1. Code Difficulty Assessment: The generated code is carefully inspected to ensure that it does not include any unfamiliar elements that haven't been covered in the course material. The goal is not just obtaining the shortest correct code but structuring programs within the confines of the instructional content.

2. Transparency in AI Decisions: If a student simply types “build a house,” the AI autonomously decides on the type of blocks, roof design, and dimensions of the house. After execution, the AI reveals these decisions to the student, providing insights into any missing details in their original instructions. This allows students to learn from the AI’s feedback on what their prompts lacked.

The programs are displayed in both MakeCode block coding and Python, allowing students to make modifications post-generation.

Course Overview

The Minecraft AI Course can be utilized alongside the previous materials in classes already using Second Lab's educational resources. Importantly, it works in collaboration with any custom worlds created by the classroom or even those using third-party materials. The initial setup cost is ¥11,000, with a monthly usage fee also set at ¥11,000 irrespective of the number of students. Individual student pricing is set at ¥4,400 per month, all including tax. There are no additional royalties or membership fees.

Students will need to have a dedicated app installed on their computers to use this course, as it currently only supports Windows OS—making it incompatible with iPads and smartphones. Additionally, a 14-day free trial is available for educators to explore the features.
